General Description of Position:
This position exists to assist with providing quality veterinary procedures for client/teaching/research animals in the VHC. This is a position primarily assigned to provide assistance with Small Animal Surgery on a daily basis, whether it is to enhance help for a busy surgery schedule, to assist with teaching, or to help with a research project. Assignment will be made by the supervisor.

Job Description:
  • Small Animal Surgery Ward 3 Technical Responsibilities: This position will be responsible for organization and maintenance of the small animal surgery Ward 3 areas and bandage room. The position will provide technical support to small animal surgery faculty, staff, and training of senior veterinary students assigned to the small animal surgery rotation. Typical responsibilities will include: a) Organize and stock the surgery ward & bandage room with necessary materials and equipment to facilitate efficiency in patient receiving, testing & treatments. b) Assist faculty in training veterinary students in basic aspects of patient care, including venipuncture, drug administration, sample submission, physical therapy, and patient hygiene. c) Assure daily data entry in medical records and accurate billing entry into the hospital information system. d) Monitor on a daily basis: pre- & post-treatment patient care, including vital signs & patient status, feeding schedules, cage and run areas, and animal appearance.
  • Small Animal Surgery OR Technical Responsibilities: 1. Prepare and maintain the surgical suites to consistently provide a sterile environment and adequate supplies 2. Assist as a surgical team member by preparing animals for surgical procedures 3. Assist surgical team members by acting as circulator during procedures, and maintaining and monitoring sterile technique in surgery areas. 4. Become familiar with new medical equipment as it becomes available.
  • Additional Responsibilities: 1. As necessary, assist with after hours emergency procedures and participate with rotational weekend and holiday stand-by. 2. Be an effective and dependable employee by beginning each day with a clean, neat uniform, establish and maintain good work habits, maintain a positive professional relationship with faculty, staff, students, and clients 3. Will cross-train to other areas within Surgical Support Services to provide support in time of illness or vacations. 4. Perform other duties as requested by supervisor or Hospital Director by following procedures developed for the KSU-VHC.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Completion of a two year college program in veterinary or animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. 
  • Must be registered as a veterinary technician under the authority of Kansas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiner within six months of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prefer a minimum of one year post-graduate experience in a veterinary hospital setting. Clinical teaching and/or supervisory experience will be considered an asset to this position

Salary Range / Pay Rate:
$12.98 - $19.13 per hour
Physical Activities and Environmental Conditions:
Position frequently involves light work. It is occasionally necessary to perform medium or heavy work associated with lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling distressed animals in close quarters, and/or equipment weighing from 2 – 100 pounds. Must be able to monitor heart sounds (hearing ) through stethoscope; monitor patient vital signs on a TV screen and/or medical monitor (sight); transport animals from cages and gurneys with heights to 48 1/2" high examination tables (lifting, carrying, pulling); insert catheters, syringe needles, etc. (fingering); and express instructions quickly (talking) in emergency situations. Surgical instrumentation – used several times daily Computer – several times daily.
General Information:
Normal work days are Monday through Friday. Employee may be required to work a variable work schedule. On occasion the workweek may be changed to accommodate emergency medical cases or varying class schedules. In addition, the employee may periodically be scheduled on stand-by for evening and/or weekend periods. This position is designated as essential.
