General Description of Position: The Veterinary Health Center is currently seeking applicants for a Health Care Technician II. This position directs preparation of medical and surgical instruments, equipment and supplies for sterilization; ensures proper loading of sterilization carts and functioning of sterilizers; oversees centralized storage, inventory and distribution of surgical and medical supplies. Assists in procurement of surgical and medical supplies for daily hospital use. Schedules, makes daily assignments and monitors work of Health Care Technician I and Central Preparation student workers. Provides input into evaluations.
Job Description: Sterilization/Prep:

A) Supervise and/or assist with preparation of laundry and folding of linens and uniforms.

B) Preparation of surgery and linen packs.

C) Sterilization of surgery packs and fluids.

D) Preparation of gauze, sponge, towel, needle and suture packs.

E) Cleaning and packaging of needles and syringes.

F) Cleaning and restocking of surgery carts.

G) Provide state of the art sterilization procedures and techniques based on continual research of current standards & practices

H) As necessary, participate with rotational on call including weekend and holiday duty.

Coordinate availability of surgical supplies, equipment; and other commodities inventoried by the Kansas State University Veterinary Health Center Central Preparation area.

A) Regularly inventory surgical and medical supply stock on hand.

B) Notifies Medical/Surgical Procurement Officer of needed supplies.

C) Receive and distribute surgical and medical supplies to service areas of the Veterinary Health Center.

D) Maintain and distribute uniforms (scrubs, lab coats, coveralls, etc.) for VHC employees, new and current.

E) Recycle and redistribute usable supplies to various areas of the VHC.

F) Dispense surgical and medical supplies on a procedure use basis.

G) Maintain a one month supply of surgical and medical supplies.

Equipment Maintenance

A) Schedule maintenance of Central Preparation equipment (ultrasonic cleaner, sterilizers, aeration chamber, heat sealer, clothes washers and dryers) to ensure proper function.

B) Log sterilizer tests as required by OSHA and EPA requirements.

C) Recommend updates to equipment based on continual research and need

D) Assist Equipment Mechanic Specialist (W0011011) in the maintenance and repair of all surgery equipment.

E) Coordinates and maintains medical devices (i.e.; clippers, clipper blade, microscopes, endoscopes, etc.).

F) Engrave and color code all surgical/hospital instruments for tracking and identification. Maintain instrument log with financial and usage records.


A) Train Central Preparation employees to ensure all sterilization procedures are properly executed.

B) Develop and maintain procedures for training and reference.

C) Develop and maintain Central Preparation safety and procedure protocols.

Outside Services:

A) Enter Hospital Information System charges for supplies/services sold to other entities.

B) Self-Help Laboratory Management: maintain the Self-Help Laboratory used by veterinary students and clinicians for clinical patients, keeping it in compliance with OSHA, EPA, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and Kansas State University Public Safety guidelines and requirements. Ensure lab is clean, supplied, and functional at all times.

C) Coordinate requested supplies for Kansas State Fair and American Royal in support of Kansas State University provided veterinary care.

D) Maintain contact with other area hospitals for back-up sterilization needs.

Be an effective and dependable employee by beginning each day with a clean, neat uniform following standard dress protocol; establishing and maintaining good work habits; maintaining positive, professional relationships with faculty, staff, students and clients; demonstrating behavior that is conducive to harmonious working relationships. Perform other duties as requested by SSSD, VHC Director, VHC Administrator or Department Head by following procedures developed for the VHC.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Six months of experience in direct care. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
Preferred Qualifications: Prefer a minimum of one year experience in sterile processing. Prefer hospital experience in autoclave operation, biomedical equipment operation and maintenance, supply and/or pharmaceutical stocking and distribution, or similar responsibilities. Preferred minimum 5 years' experience providing independent, complex work experience in administrative support. Ability to read supply requisition forms, maintain accurate records and a daily running inventory of materials stocked, dispensed and requested. Ability to interpret quality control monitors (i.e. autoclave tape color changes, internal pack sensitivity discs, etc.) which relate to degree of sterilization gained during processing of surgical instrument and supply packs. Knowledge of basic computer operations, to include familiarity with concepts of a database management program capable of maintaining a daily running inventory of materials stocked, dispensed and requested. Initiative to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment difficulties without being directly supervised (i.e. automatically check equipment performance and cleanliness each time it is presented to the employee).
