Job Description:

Fellow Post-Doc position in Range Science located in Woodward, OK. 

The GrazingCAP project is a multi-institutional research and extension project aimed at better understanding resilience and vulnerability of beef cattle production in the Southern Great Plains under changing climate, land use and markets. A postdoctoral associate is needed to support a rangeland scientist that's 1) evaluating the use of very large-scale aerial (VLSA) imagery to characterize native vegetation at sites in Oklahoma, and 2) assessing the effects of patch burning on landscape utilization patterns by cattle from GPS collars.

The incumbent will work closely with a range scientist and other project personnel to process imagery and GPS collar data, analyze these data, and prepare reports and manuscript for publications.

 

Job duties include:

  • Analyzing and summarizing research data
  • Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals
  • Present research findings at national conferences and the annual GrazingCAP meetings
  • Participate in proposal writing
  • Perform related and unplanned tasks consistent with the GrazingCAP project research

 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in range science, ecology, soil science, plant science or related field
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis, image analysis, remote sensing and GIS
  • Ability to work independently and interact with a multidisciplinary team of scientists
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of Southern Great Plains native plants and the ability to identify and name species

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge and experience characterizing herbaceous vegetation from imagery.

Knowledge and experience using R statistical software and open source GIS software such as QGIS, PostGIS, and/or GDAL.

Physical Activities and Environmental Conditions:

This position exposes the incumbent to environmental extremes of heat and cold.
