General Description of Position: The Department of Animal Sciences & Industry and the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University invites applications for a Tenure Track, Assistant Professor position in the area of Sheep and Meat Goats.  This position is 30% Teaching and 70% Extension.

The starting date is negotiable.  Professorial rank is based on academic experience and accomplishments commensurate with departmental guidelines for each academic rank. Salary will commensurate with the applicant's experience and qualifications.  

Information about the Department: The Department of Animal Sciences and Industry has a long and rich heritage. From the down-to-earth animal husbandry group that emerged from the Farming Department in 1901, to its current form as one of the largest Animal Science departments in the United States, K-State animal science has held fast to its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and extension.

Kansas State University is located in the city of Manhattan, which has a population of about 56,000. Faculty in Animal Sciences and Industry are housed in two buildings on the K-State campus (Weber Hall and Call Hall). The buildings contain well-equipped laboratories, teaching facilities, a dairy processing plant and a meat processing facility.

Field research facilities for beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, poultry, horses, and sheep are located in close proximity to campus. The department manages about 6,500 acres of land for research purposes. In a typical year, departmental research and teaching facilities accommodate about 2000 to 3000 cattle, 3500 swine, 1500 laying hens, 250 sheep and 45 horses.

The Successful Candidate will: The successful candidate will have the ability to:  
  • Develop and lead extension, applied research and teaching programs in sheep and meat goat production and management
  • Develop multi-disciplinary extension collaborations to deliver technical / scientific information
  • Oversee the K-State Sheep and Meat Goat Center
  • Teach undergraduate sheep and meat goat science, advise undergraduate and graduate students and supervise collegiate wool judging team
  • Secure extramural support for funding of both extension and applied research programs
  • Serve as liaison between producers, youth operations, allied industry and Kansas State University
  • Work in a diverse and multicultural environment
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Animal Science and/or DVM or related area by the start date.
  • Trained and experienced in the production and management of sheep and/or meat goats.
  • Demonstrated evidence of being a successful team member and leader, including the ability to collaborate with a diverse team of colleagues, staff, students and sheep and meat goat stakeholders.
  • Documented oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write scholarly and industry-relevant publications/conduct workshops to effectively communicate with stakeholders.
  • Established profieciency in the interpretation and translation of scientific/technical information into educational resources for extension and teaching programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous teaching, advising and wool judging experience.
  • Experience securing extramural support and conducting extension programming and applied research with sheep and/or meat goats.
