General Description of Position: Food Service Workers make good things happen and support the service and production of safe, wholesome food for the residents and guests in our residence hall dining centers.  Early and late shift positions are available and offer full-time K-State benefits.

Job Description:
  • Set-up and prepare cafeteria, salad bar, fruit/dessert area, and dining room area for service of food to student residents, guests, and staff according to schedules and cafeteria procedure booklets. Prepare for meal service by setting temperature of food holding equipment, collecting utensils, baskets, pans, preparing condiments and beverages, placing food on cafeteria lines, buffet tables, salad bars, condiment tables, etc. Provide for customer needs during meal service by promoting quick, friendly service, assisting customers with special needs, and keeping serving and dining areas clean. Replenishes items throughout service.  Participate in daily meetings and interacts with other employees effectively to achieve goals.  May provide training and guidance to hourly student employees.
  • Perform routine duties under supervision in preparing a variety of less complicated entrees and side dishes using standardized recipes. Follow established procedures and schedules to ensure that high quality, food is served. Prepare fresh vegetables and fruits using various equipment and methods. Clean equipment after each use and assist with prepping, labeling, and freezing of excess canned or fresh ingredients.  
  • Operate, clean and sanitize equipment in warewashing area and dish return belts. Clean and sanitize all tableware trays, utensils, pots, pans, and equipment used in meal preparation and service.  Clean kitchen, serving line, dining rooms, stairwell, restrooms. Launders, folds and stores linens.  Follow all established HACCP and food safety procedures. Operate and clean equipment and maintain work areas in a safe and sanitary manner by using established procedures to reduce risk of personal injury and increase equipment life.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with students, university staff support and managers. Performs all duties in a manner that promotes a team oriented, harmonious work environment that espouses civility and the University Principles of Community. Assists in the educational program for the Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health students in order to provide a teaching laboratory. Performs other duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications: Some food production, baking, and/or service experience in an institutional or volume setting. Prefer some knowledge of large scale food production, service, equipment, food safety and sanitation procedures. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to learn to perform basic math computations; to accurately weigh and measure ingredients, to use and care for equipment and handle food safely while preparing high quality products.

Salary Range / Pay Rate: $10.69 per hour.  Some positions may be eligible for $.40 per hour shift differential.
