General Description of Position:

The College of Engineering at Kansas State University (K-State) invites nominations and applications for the position of Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, which also bestows the Snell Professorship. The College seeks an individual with the innovative leadership skills needed to strengthen successful instructional, research, and outreach programs in the department. The new head will lead the department as it increases the number of graduating students, expands its facilities, and hires new faculty.  The department head will maintain productive relationships and development activities with alumni, external businesses and government agencies.  The successful candidate will have credentials of the highest quality including a strong record of scholarly and professional accomplishments, a distinguished scholarly reputation in the engineering community, and excellent interpersonal skills. An earned doctorate in civil engineering or a closely related field is required.

College and University:

The Department of Civil Engineering at Kansas State University is excited to continue growing a nationally recognized interdisciplinary research program while maintaining a rich tradition of teaching excellence. The department offers an ABET accredited BS degree, as well as MS and PhD programs, and participates in the university’s off-campus master’ programs. Established programs of study and research include environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation/materials engineering, and water resources engineering. These activities are supported through numerous department laboratories for research and teaching.  Several centers and multidisciplinary programs exist to facilitate collaboration (www.ksu.edu/directories/research-facilities.html). The department has 16 faculty members and approximately 370 undergraduate and graduate students. The department is located in Fiedler Hall, which is equipped with state-of-the-art research laboratories, classrooms, and office spaces. The Civil Engineering Department has internationally recognized ASCE and Chi Epsilon Student Chapters.

The College of Engineering at Kansas State University is undergoing rapid expansion and is adding 35 additional faculty over a five-year period. The College of Engineering is the largest and most comprehensive engineering college in Kansas, with over 4,200 undergraduate and graduate students.  The department head reports to the dean of the college, and is responsible for the administration of all programs and budgets of the department.

Kansas State University, with its enrollment of approximately 25,000 students, is designated a Carnegie Doctoral/Research-Extensive Institution and has declared its goal to be a top-50 public research university by 2025. K-State has been selected as the future home of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF); this $1.25 billion research facility will provide research infrastructure to protect the country’s food supply and agriculture economy. The College of Engineering is located on the main K-State campus in Manhattan, KS. Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • A strong record of teaching, research, service and proven leadership and administrative abilities
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively nurture talent, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity/inclusion
  • Academic credentials and professional qualifications that merit appointment as a tenured Full Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering
  • Earned doctoral degree in civil engineering or a closely related field
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A demonstrated capability for leadership by example, consensus and authority with good personnel skills Engagement in national/international professional organizations
  • Ability to lead and facilitate a positive environment for continuing growth of the department and its endowment.
  • Registration as a professional engineer or other professional licensure
  • Proven fiscal and managerial skills
  • A record of increasing administrative responsibility
  • A record of positive interaction with business, alumni and other relevant constituents
  • Demonstrated ability to raise substantial external funding
