Job Description:

The Nuclear Reactor Facility Manager is directly responsible for the operation of the 1250 kW Kansas State University TRIGA Mark II research reactor and associated laboratories. Duties of the Nuclear Reactor Facility Manager include teaching reactor operations training classes, planning for facility upgrades, training personnel, document control, maintaining radioactive material licenses, and interfacing with existing and potential customers.  A vital responsibility of the Reactor Manager is to manage the facility license and serve as the primary point of contact for the NRC.  The Manager may hold academic and research responsibilities beyond those associated with the Reactor Facility. The Nuclear Reactor Facility Manager is authorized to delegate responsibility for operation and use of the reactor to the Reactor Supervisor. The Manager is responsible for ensuring that reactor operation and use of radioisotopes conform with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations. This position reports to the Head of the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. 

The department has 29 faculty members with annual research expenditures of approximately $5M per year and over 1000 undergraduate and graduate students. Manhattan is a vibrant, family-oriented city in the scenic Flint Hills. It is the cultural and business hub of a tri-county area community of over 200,000 residents (see http://www.manhattan.org). The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is building the $1.25B National Bio and Agro-defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan, adjacent to the campus, which is expected to be fully operational by 2022-23 (http://www.k-state.edu/nbaf).

Required Minimum Qualifications:

MS in Nuclear Science and Engineering or a closely-related field (or work equivalent), with five to ten years of relevant work experience. 

Ability to successfully obtain USNRC Senior Reactor Operator license for KSU TRIGA Mark II Nuclear Reactor within one year of employment start date. Accordingly, applicants must meet the requirements listed in ANSI/ANS 15.4, American National Standard for the Selection, Training and Qualification of Personnel for Research Reactors, and successfully obtain medical certification per 10 CFR 55 Subpart C, in addition to successfully passing the written examination and operating tasks per 10 CFR 55 Subpart E. 

Ability to obtain unescorted access for KSU TRIGA Mark II Nuclear Reactor (training, exam, and background check) within six months of start date. 

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in Nuclear Science and Engineering or a closely-related field and five years of relevant experience. 

Has previously held unescorted access and a USNRC Senior Reactor Operator license at a research or power reactor. 

Previous management experience and a basic knowledge of radiation protection. 

Physical Activities and Environmental Conditions :

Occasional use of pendant-controlled, overhead crane.

Routine access to facility areas via metal stairs.

Occasional ladder use.

Occasional heavy lifting.

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation.

Exposure to materials routinely used in radiation shielding, such as lead and cadmium.
