The Department of Communications and Ag. Education is one of eight academic departments under the College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension.

K-State Ag has been leading the way in agriculture, food, and natural resources since 1863, providing a home for agriculture students from across the globe. Our students are prepared to be the next generation of agriculture leaders through engagement in the classroom, hands-on learning and student leadership. The College of Agriculture has 2,699 undergraduate students, 545 graduate students, and 200 faculty members with time dedicated to teaching. Attracting and retaining agriculture faculty members of the highest caliber is as important as attracting the best and the brightest students. Faculty members work on-and-off campus to advance scientific research and develop new knowledge and products. The knowledge they develop provides the basis to solve problems. The Opportunity: Kansas State University seeks applications for the position of Head, Department of Communications and Agricultural Education. This is a 12-month position with competitive salary to commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate should have credentials for appointment as a tenured full professor, although applications with credentials at the Associate Professor level may be considered. Position available 01/01/18 or later as negotiated.
Department Information:  The Department of Communications and Agricultural Education has nationally recognized faculty in programs encompassing teaching, research, extension and service in the agricultural communication and education fields. It is one of eight academic departments in the College of Agriculture and is comprised of 8 faculty, 52 professional and support staff. The department serves 150 undergraduate students majoring in agricultural communications and journalism, and agricultural education; and 25 on campus and distance graduate students seeking master’s degrees in agricultural communication and education. A new interdisciplinary Leadership Communication Ph.D. program will launch in Fall 2018. This research degree is the first interdisciplinary doctorate program at Kansas State University and is a joint effort of faculty in the Departments of Communications and Agricultural Education, Communication Studies, and Leadership Studies. The department provides comprehensive research, consulting and service in communication and marketing for K-State Research and Extension and the College of Agriculture. It also serves as home to the University in-plant printing operation, University Printing, and the Center for Rural Enterprise Engagement. The Successful Candidate:

The Department Head provides leadership and administrative guidance to: 

  • Foster excellence in research, extension, teaching and both domestic and international service 
  • Promote quality instruction in undergraduate and graduate programs 
  • Actively involve faculty and staff in the decision-making process, using appointed and elected committees as appropriate 
  • Plan and supervise programs relevant to the department's mission within the land grant university system, manage departmental budgetary and financial matters and assist faculty in generating extramural support 
  • Offer strategic direction for a diverse academic and communication service-related department 
  • Create an environment that fosters diversity, collegiality, teamwork and ability to work in a multicultural setting 
  • Evaluate, counsel and promote professional development of faculty, staff and students 
  • Recruit, hire and retain talented and entrepreneurial faculty and staff 
  • Recruit and retain graduate and undergraduate students to meet industry demands  
  • Engage and interact with alumni and other stakeholders and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students and university administrators 
  • Represent and promote the department within academic, professional and scientific communities 
  • Routinely engage with stakeholder advisory groups serving to provide direction for graduate and undergraduate programs 
  • Facilitate development and fundraising for various departmental programs and activities 
  • Maintain and enhance high quality organizational communication services to the College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension  
  • Continue personal professional development in administration and/or research, teaching, or extension 
  • Work closely and collaboratively with College and University leadership
Required Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate in Communication, Education, Extension, Leadership or related discipline 
  • Candidate must have credentials for appointment in a faculty position with tenure 
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, including administrative, personnel management, budgeting, communication skills, grantsmanship, and the ability to positively represent the department to scientific, stakeholder, alumni and community groups 
  • Strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research, extension and both domestic and international service; appreciation of the important role of distance education in meeting the needs of a diverse student population
  • Earnest desire to expand diversity in the department and broader university community  
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Credentials for appointment as a tenured professor
  • Experience in teaching, research, extension and/or international programs at a land grant university 
  • Exemplary record of professional achievement 
  • One degree in Agricultural Communications or Agricultural Education 
  • Knowledge of trends and technology in new media 
  • Prior experience in school-based agricultural education 
  • Industry or field experience in Communications or Agricultural Education 
  • Experience in successful delivery of high quality communication support services
  • Demonstrated experience developing, managing, or serving on multi-disciplinary teams
