General Description of Position:

The Food Service Manager offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that will provide exceptional food and service to the campus and local community.  Directs the efficient production of beverages and quality food as the Food and Beverages Manager by supervising full-time Cook Seniors and part-time student staff. 

This position offers the opportunity to put your passion for food, recipe development, food trends and cultural cuisines to work; to demonstrate communication skills that support effective staff training and the development and expansion of staff job competencies; to promote a “guest first” service culture; and apply skills that support upper management in the successful operation of retail venues.

Information about the Department:

Housing and Dining Services is a large, self-operated auxiliary department serving more than 6,000 students that call the K-State campus home.  This "home away from home" meets more than the basic needs of students living with us — we provide affordable, safe and engaging accommodations for our residents, while finding unique ways to support them in their academic pursuits.  The department is comprised of four functional areas:  dining services; facilities management; student living; and administrative services. 

As part of the department’s commitment to students, retail offerings will expand to include Union Station by JP’s (a full service restaurant), Fast Track (fast casual concept), and Union Station by JP’s on-site provided catering services.  These new venues will complement services currently provided to the campus and local community:   JP’s Sports Grill, Cornerstone Coffee & Bakery, Quik Cats Convenience Stores, Overtime Grill at Kramer, and The Bakery at Derby.

The Successful Candidate will:

Perform duties to include: 

  • Develops standardized recipes for food and drinks with an emphasis on creativity, trend setting, innovation, efficiency, food quality, customer service, allergen awareness, operational parameters, and local food and beverage. Evaluates recipes for accuracy as production occurs.
  • Develop standardized recipes for a strong craft beer and cocktail program that support Union Station by JP's, catered events, and special menus.
  • Support the efforts of management to establish and oversee an effective system for quality control in food preparation, food presentation, and food quality.
  • Provides support to all food production staff and managers by teaching efficient food preparation and production methods, food quality and food presentation, standards, customer service, sanitation and safety (including allergen safety).
  • Evaluates food production procedures and food quality in Union Station by JP's and in Fast Track by JP's.  Supports education initiatives to enhance staff job competencies.
  • Assists managers in developing labor schedules and work assignments, participates in interviews, coaches and evaluates employees.  Actively promotes a harmonious work environment and supports employee growth and development.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of departmental policies, procedures, standards, goals, objectives, budget, and marketing/public relations activities.  Supports all efforts to ensure a quality, “guest first” service culture.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires two years of relevant experience with one year of experience at the supervisory level.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline or significant relevant work experience with a solid knowledge base for food production, presentation, recipes development, cultural cuisines and growing trends in the food service industry.
  • 1-5 years of progressive professional leadership in the hospitality field.
  • Experience in a university, restaurant, or catering foodservice setting.
  • A comprehensive understanding of materials, equipment, methods, techniques, and terminology used in a full service restaurant and kitchen.
  • Experience interacting with patrons and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with customers.
  • Strong communication/interpersonal skills that support the effective delivery of training for a variety of staff.  This includes writing and public speaking/presentations, teaching and instruction.
  • Leadership and coaching skills.

Other Requirements:

The ability to work variable work hours including evenings and week-ends.
ServSafe certification within 60 days of employment. Must be 21 years of age.

Salary Range/ Pay Rate:

$14.21 – $21.31 per hour.  May be eligible for additional $.40 per hour shift differential for qualifying hours.

Please note: the minimum salary for this position is $14.21.  Actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's experience, education, internal equity and departmental funding. Salary offers are typically made between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. The range indicated includes both the typical hiring range and potential future progression.
