General Description of Position:

At the heart of it all, our dynamic team of Cooks prepare safe, wholesome food for the residents and guests in the Residence Hall system at Kansas State University.  Cooks provide food production support to 5-6 different food and service platforms in a “from scratch” production environment in a state of the art facility.  Employment includes a generous comprehensive benefits package:  http://www.k-state.edu/hcs/benefits/

Housing and Dining Services is a large, self-operated auxiliary department serving more than 6,000 students that call the K-State campus home.  This "home away from home" meets more than the basic needs of students living with us — we provide affordable, safe and engaging accommodations for our residents, while finding unique ways to support them in their academic pursuits.

The Successful Candidate will:

  • Prepare multi-step, complex entrees and side dishes. Assist in the coordination of food production using batch cooking methods. Follow menus and use standardized recipes to produce a variety of consistently high quality foods. Taste and evaluate products, making adjustments as necessary. Use batch cooking techniques to see that food is fresh, to temperature, presented in an appealing manner and consistently available and of high quality throughout service period.  Establishe controls for effectively using resources Discuss and plan food preparation time schedule and equipment use with supervisor for non-routine items. Participate in scheduled job training sessions and meetings.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain equipment and work areas in a safe and sanitary manner.  Assures compliance with all cleaning and sanitation standards. 
  • Evaluate HACCP and food safety activities and works closely with others to make sure all equipment and cleaning standards are being met. Stores and handles food in a safe and sanitary manner using established procedures.   
  • Perform all assigned duties in a manner that promotes a harmonious work environment that espouses civility and the University Principles of Community. Supports Kansas State University's Affirmative Action program. Assist in the educational program for the Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health students by sharing information regarding routine questions of procedure, recipes, leftover use, etc., in order to provide a teaching laboratory. Function as a team worker by: cooperating with and assisting co-workers, sharing equipment, work space, and information. Demonstrate regularly to production staff the techniques for producing quality food in quantity. Train and oversee the work of student employees in production area. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Requires one year of experience in commercial/institutional cooking.

Preferred Qualifications:

Considerable knowledge of large scale food preparation, equipment, health sanitation, and safety procedures. Prefer versatility, a commitment to quality and the ability to work harmoniously with others. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to learn to perform basic math computations; to accurately weigh and measure ingredients, to use and care for equipment and handle food safely while preparing high quality products.

Salary Range/Pay Rate:

$11.00 per hour + $.60 per hour shift differential for qualifying work shifts

Please note: the minimum pay rate for this position is $11.00 per hour. Actual pay rate will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and departmental funding. Salary offers are typically made between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. The range indicated includes both the typical hiring range and potential future progression.
