General Description of Position:

Dining Center Assistants make good things happen and support the service and production of safe, wholesome food for the residents and guests in our residence hall dining centers.  These positions offer the ability to work a few hours per day, 3-4 days per week (no week-end work is required) and participate in a team oriented environment in a  state of the art dining facility.

Housing and Dining Services is a large, self-operated auxiliary department serving more than 6,000 students that call the K-State campus home.  This "home away from home" meets more than the basic needs of students living with us — we provide affordable, safe and engaging accommodations for our residents, while finding unique ways to support them in their academic pursuits.

The Successful Candidate will:

  • Set-up and prepare cafeteria, salad bar, fruit/dessert area, and dining room area for service of food according to schedules and established procedures.  Prepare for meal service by setting temperature of food holding equipment, collecting utensils, baskets, pans, preparing condiments and beverages, placing food on cafeteria lines, buffet tables, salad bars, condiment tables, etc. Provide for customer needs during meal service by promoting quick, friendly service, assisting customers with special needs, and keeping serving and dining areas clean. Replenishes items throughout service.  May participate in team meetings and provide general guidance and training to student staff. 
  • Monitor customer access to the dining center cafeteria during operating hours.   Follows all the procedures established to efficiently operate access and card reader equipment.  Assures dining room access rules and regulations are followed.
  • Prepare a variety of less complicated entrees and side dishes using standardized recipes. Follow established procedures and schedules to ensure that high quality, food is served. Prepare fresh vegetables and fruits using various equipment and methods. Clean equipment after each use and assist with prepping, labeling, and freezing of excess ingredients.  
  • Operate, clean and sanitize equipment in warewashing area and dish return belts. Clean and sanitize all tableware trays, utensils, pots, pans, and equipment used in meal preparation and service.  Clean dining facility and launders, folds and stores linens.  Follow all established HACCP and food safety procedures. Operate and clean equipment and maintain work areas in a safe and sanitary manner by using established procedures to reduce risk of personal injury and increase equipment life.
  • Performs all duties in a manner that promotes a team oriented, harmonious work environment that espouses civility and the University Principles of Community. Assists in the educational program for the Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health students in order to provide a teaching laboratory. Performs other duties as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

Some food production, baking, and/or service experience in an institutional or volume setting. Prefer some knowledge of food safety and sanitation procedures. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to learn to perform basic math computations; to accurately weigh and measure ingredients, to use and care for equipment and handle food safely while preparing high quality products.

Salary Range/Pay Rate:

$9.20 - $10.69 per hour

Please note: the minimum pay rate for this position is $9.20 per hour. Actual pay rate will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and departmental funding. Salary offers are typically made between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. The range indicated includes both the typical hiring range and potential future progression.
