General Description of Position:

The Art Department at Kansas State University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank to begin Fall 2018. The successful candidate will primarily teach Digital Techniques in Visual Art, as a part of our Foundation curricula. Digital Techniques is a course, like the technology landscape itself, that is in constant evolution. It requires professional digital skills as well as a deep conceptual understanding of foundation design thinking and problem solving, as well as the ability to adapt to, and anticipate new territory in the field.

The Foundation area teaches first-year undergraduates who will continue their BFA studies in the major, as well as students from outside the department who may be interested in developing their creative skills in the digital realm. The successful candidate will have expertise and teaching experience at the Foundation level and beyond in two or more of the following areas: digital animation, motion graphics, web design and development, or data visualization. Candidates should have an ability to contribute in all ways to the department, including the ability to teach across disciplines, as well as an interest in working within a liberal arts environment and developing collaborative professional relationships across the University. S/he will also be expected to play an active role in the life of the Department and University as a whole.

The Successful Candidate will:

The successful candidate will, along with proficiency in the basic programs of the Adobe Creative Suite, have a working knowledge of modern scripting languages for development on one or more platforms, such as web, mobile, or who have experience and skills related to digital arts and aesthetic design. S/he will have a strong interest in pursuing research/creative activity, and will be expected to demonstrate an evolving body of published research, creative work, and/or conference presentations in a relevant area.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

The position requires an MFA or equivalent in Digital Media, Graphic Design, or a related field, and teaching experience at the college/ university/art school level is preferred. Candidates must be proficient in basic programs of the Adobe Creative Suite. A strong record of professional or academic accomplishment in the applicant’s field of art and/or design is essential. Candidates must also have excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to work well with diverse populations. The successful applicant must meet eligibility requirements to work within the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates who, along with proficiency in the basic design, motion, and editing programs of the Adobe Creative Suite, have a working knowledge of modern scripting languages for one or more platforms such as web and mobile development, or who have experience and skills related to digital arts and aesthetic design.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Teach Digital Techniques in Visual Art at the Foundation level.
  • Prepare students to major in multiple disciplines in the department.
  • Demonstrate and maintain substantial creative accomplishments and professional standing in applicant’s field of art and/or design.
  • Participate in curriculum development.
  • Participate in committee work and other service to the department and college.
  • Possibly teach web design and development, and/or data visualization to upper level students.
  • Full-time faculty on a 9-month appointment teach a load of 5 studio courses per year (2/3 or 3/2): two six-hour studio classes per week in one semester and three six-hour studio classes in the other.
  • Service responsibilities include student advising and mentoring, taking an active role in curriculum development and assessment, and aiding in the management of classroom equipment and resources.
