About This Role:

K-State Polytechnic Research and Engagement (Applied Aviation Research Center) is looking for a motivated UAS Flight Instructor Pilot to specialize in UAS flight operations education and training in a rapidly growing industry.

As the UAS Flight Instructor Pilot you will:

  • Perform ground and flight UAS operations in adherence with applicable flight regulations and requirements
  • Develop UAS operational training curriculum for industry needs
  • Provide UAS classroom and lab Instruction
  • Gather information on weather and aircraft (e.g., weight/loading of the aircraft)
  • Conduct pre-mission planning and briefing with the ground crew
  • Complete all post flight reports to include mission logs, daily events, etc.
  • Plan and conduct experiments, keep laboratory records, write and edit manuscripts and articles
  • Research UAS electronics and sensor technology integration
  • Other duties as assigned which may include some evening and weekends

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum requirements:

  • Associate degree in aviation or engineering technology (This position may use educational equivalency as determined relevant by a hiring manager)
  • Valid Pilot's License and FAA Part 107 remote pilot-in-command (RPIC) certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in aviation with emphasis in UAS operations
  • FAA Fundamentals of Instruction certification and Instrument Pilot
  • Experience operating UAS under Certificates of Authorization, at night, and in an extended visual line of sight or beyond line of sight environment
  • Piccolo autopilot and VTOL UAS pilot experience
  • Systems integration experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Other Requirements:

  • United States citizenship as required by Technology Control Plan
  • Extensive knowledge on UAS curriculum development, integration, and training
  • Proficiency on different UAS systems, 1-2 year background in UAS flight and ground instruction, analog & digital electronics
  • Knowledgeable on Microsoft Office, computer networking and programming, and computer based systems
  • Knowledge of Certificate of Authorization process and Part 107 operations
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Able to work form engineering prints/schematics and parts lists
  • Remote Pilot in Command Certificate (required to operate sUAS under 14 CFR Part 107)
  • Minimum of an FAA Private Pilot Certificate (required by Certificate of Authorization)
  • Current FAA Class II flight medical (required by Certificate of Authorization)

Salary Range:

$49,770 - $87,097

Please note: the minimum salary for this position is $49,770. Actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's experience, education, internal equity and departmental funding. Salary offers are typically made between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. The range indicated includes both the typical hiring range and potential future progression.
