General Description of Position:

The Power System Operation and Control (PSOC) group in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is looking for a Post-Doctoral Fellow with a positive attitude and excellent collaboration skills to join our cutting-edge research team. The ideal candidate will bring a strong track record in electricity market and optimization theory, along with the development and analysis of distributed and centralized power system operation. Application domains include, but are not limited to: distributed control of smart grids, real-time optimization of bulk power systems, microgrid operation, optimal power flow, and demand response. Ideal candidates will work towards the implementation of new models, algorithms for operations and control in electric power systems.

The College of Engineering at Kansas State University is undergoing rapid expansion and is adding 35 additional faculty over a five year time period.

The College of Engineering is the largest and most comprehensive engineering college in Kansas, with over 4200 undergraduate and graduate students. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, as one of eight departments within the college, has 25 faculty members and approximately 550 undergraduate and graduate students. The department is located in the new Engineering Hall equipped with the state-of-the-art research laboratories, classrooms, and office spaces. The department has strong research programs in power engineering, electronics, wireless communications, network engineering, and biomedical engineering. The Successful Candidate will:

  • Investigate research problems and experiments under supervision of Drs. Mirafzal, Wu, and Shadmand,
  • Assist the power faculties in developing research proposals for federal funding agencies in power and energy area,
  • Teach undergraduate courses assigned by department,
  • Work with PhD students in lab to improve the productivity of the power group,
  • Publish research outcomes in high impact journals.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Recent Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant PhD in Electrical Engineering or systems engineering fields
  • Experience with technical computer-based simulations, ideally in energy systems
  • Experience with computer programming and software development
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Distributed and centralized operation of power systems
  • Convex optimization with game theory
  • Market operation for transmission and distribution grid
  • Familiarity with latest findings in control and optimization literature within the context of power systems
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the electric utility industry, regulated and unregulated markets, as well as cutting edge smart grid concepts and developments
  • General knowledge of other related disciplines
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following programming languages: Matlab and GAMS
  • Experience in developing models and algorithms for transmission and distribution electric power systems
  • Knowledge of double-sided auction is a plus
