General Description of Position:

The Division of Biology seeks a highly motivated person to support research in molecular microbial ecology.

Job Description:

Responsibilities of this position encompass the collection, organization and primary analysis of data on the abundance and activity of microorganisms in environmental samples. Specific tasks include aseptic sample collection and handling in the field and the laboratory, DNA extraction and PCR of target genes, enzymatic activity assays, cellular metabolite production and substrate depletion assays (lab and field-based), general laboratory maintenance in support of data collection, and data and metadata organization. Job duties include approximately 20% fieldwork, 40% laboratory data acquisition and supporting lab maintenance, 40% data analysis and management; with a greater proportion of time spent on fieldwork during the spring and summer months.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor's Degree

Preferred Qualifications:

-Degree in Biology, with coursework in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Ecology

- Experience with basic molecular biology laboratory research

- Experience with field-based soil and aquatic ecology research

- Experience with data and metadata organization

- Specific experience in basic molecular biology laboratory research including 96-well plate enzyme assays, DNA extraction and quantitation, and PCR.

- Specific experience in field-based soil and aquatic ecology research including soil, aquatic biofilm collection using appropriate handling for downstream molecular and chemistry applications; measurement of root growth and total soil respiration, and of biofilm mass and areal coverage.

- Specific experience in with data and metadata organization including proficiency with Excel and Word software, and hierarchical organization of both raw and derived data products in association with sample and analysis metadata attributes, in preparation for databasing.

- Good critical thinking and communication skills.

Salary Range / Pay Rate:

Salary commensurate upon education and experience.  $16.38-$27.85/hr
