About this Role: The Center of Excellence for Vector-Borne Diseases (CEVBD) with the Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant Professor. The efforts of this position include support for research and training programs, fiscal monitoring, personnel management, coordination of meetings and other CEVBD-related activities, communication to stakeholders, production and publication communication materials, scheduling and related organizational matters and distribution of reports and other materials.

Duties / Responsibilities: Research duties:
  • Conduct independent research in the research areas in line with Dr. Roman Ganta with a special focus on protein biology
  • Publish the research results
  • Present the research results at scientific meetings where and when possible
  • Prepare grant applications for securing continuous funding to do research on vector-borne pathogens/diseases

Personnel duties:

  • Mentor post-doctoral associates, graduate students and other scientists in the research team
  • Following appropriate university guidelines to develop research projects and execute the research 
Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in an area of biological sciences
  • A minimum of four years research experience after receiving a PhD degree or equivalent. 
    • The research experience must be in an area of tick-borne pathogen research with a special emphasis on rickettsial diseases, caused by Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species pathogens.  Experience must include in studies focused on targeted mutagenesis, animal infection studies with the canine host, fluorescent microscopy, DNA and RNA analysis, including Southern blotting, real time and semi quantitative RT-PCRs and protein analysis.  High level of cell culture experience in growing Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species is needed.  High level of molecular biology experience is also required.  The experience with evidence of published research in peer-reviewed scientific papers is essential, including publication(s) on targeted mutagenesis. 
  • Individual must possess excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills.  Computer skills are also required.
