About This Role:

At the heart of it all, our dynamic team works together to prepare safe, wholesome food for the residents and guests in the Residence Hall system at Kansas State University. Cooks provide food production support to 5-6 different food and service platforms in a “from scratch” production environment. Most positions require rotating week-end shifts.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Prepare multi-step, complex entrees and side dishes using standardized menus and recipes.  Assist in the coordination of food production using batch cooking methods to produce quality food that is fresh, to temperature, presented in an appealing manner and consistently available throughout the service period.
  • Actively participate in job training sessions and meetings.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain equipment and work areas in a safe and sanitary manner. Complies with all cleaning and sanitation standards. 
  • Evaluate HACCP and food safety activities and works closely with others to make sure all equipment and cleaning standards are being met. Stores and handles food in a safe and sanitary manner. 
  • Assist in the educational program for the Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health students.  Participate as an effective team worker by cooperating with and assisting co-workers, sharing equipment, work space, and information.
  • Train and oversee the work of student employees in production area. Perform other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements: Requires one year of experience in commercial/institutional cooking. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Considerable knowledge of large scale food preparation, equipment, health sanitation, and safety procedures.
  • Prefer versatility, a commitment to quality and the ability to engage with and work harmoniously with others.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to learn to perform basic math computations; to accurately weigh and measure ingredients, to use and care for equipment and handle food safely while preparing high quality products.  

Other Requirements:

  • This position is considered essential during a Declaration of Inclement Weather.
  • Completion of HACCP Food Safety Program within six months of employment.
  • Moderate physical exertion is required to perform the essential functions of this position. This includes, but is not limited to, lifting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, standing, walking, repetitive movement, transporting items up to 50 lbs.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment

Salary Range/ Pay Rate:

$9.88 - $14.32 per hour + $.60 shift differential for qualifying work shifts

Actual salary will be determined based on the candidate's experience, education, internal equity and departmental funding. Salary offers are typically made between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. The range indicated includes both the typical hiring range and potential future progression.
