About This Role:

The Kansas State University School of Music, Theatre, and Dance invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment in light and sound design to begin August 18, 2019.

Responsibilities are to teach applied undergraduate courses in light and sound design, supervise student lighting/sound design/reinforcement in production, and creating stage lighting and sound design for theatre, dance, and opera productions throughout the year. Additionally, the successful candidate will maintain an active portfolio of external creative and/or research activities in lighting and/or sound design, maintain sound and lighting equipment, manage lighting and sound budgets, and collaborate within a creative faculty team of designers, directors, and stage managers. Additional duties may be assigned as required.

The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance has 100 Theatre majors pursuing the B.A. and B.S. degrees; 15 graduate Theatre students pursuing the M.A degree in theatre with a concentration in drama therapy; approximately 240 undergraduate Music majors pursuing the B.M., B.A., and B.M.E. degrees; 40 graduate Music students pursuing M.M. degrees; and offers minors in Music, Theatre, and Dance. The School has 52 full-time and 2 part-time faculty members, is supported by a Director and an Associate Director for each of the three areas of Music, Theatre, and Dance, a full-time academic advisor, and by four full-time administrative staff members.

The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance is accredited by NASM and NAST and is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, the “intellectual and academic core of the University” with 23 academic units. A land-grant institution, Kansas State University is a Carnegie “very high research” and “engaged” university with more than 4,000 students who participate in curricular and co-curricular activities offered through the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

Manhattan, Kansas, where Kansas State is located, is in the rolling Flint Hills of Northeast Kansas, 125 miles west of Kansas City via Interstate 70. Five miles north of the city is Tuttle Creek Reservoir, one of the largest in the Midwest. The 668-acre campus is convenient to both business and residential areas. “The Little Apple” is a classic college town with more than 56,000 residents.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master of Fine Arts in Theatre.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in Theatre Sound and Light Design.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.

Salary Range/ Pay Rate:

$55,000-$60,000 - Salary is commensurate with experience, qualifications and start-up fund support.
