About This Role:

Soul Bloom Lending is a collaborative, community start-up project that seeks to help individuals break the cycle of predatory lending by providing loan consolidation with lower interest rates. Soul Bloom lending has secured the finances to launch a lending program. An intern is needed for the project systems to be researched, determined and setup before launching.

Internship Dates:

May 28, 2019 thru August 2, 2019 or as negotiated with K-State Research & Extension.


Salina, KS

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Research lending laws and contracts; methods for vetting applicants for loans; forming partnerships with lending institutions; and loan repayment account tracking and protocol.
  • Research the type of education needed to break the cycle of debt; types of education that foster financial independence; budgeting for debt reduction; existing community financial education resources; and existing community mentoring resources.
  • Research how case management fosters loan repayment; what types of social support might families in financial crisis need; which existing community support services would help the loan applicants; how Soul Bloom Lending can collaborate with other nonprofits; and what volunteer opportunities would most serve loan applicants.
  • Once research is completed, protocols, policies and procedures will be developed for Soul Bloom Lending.
  • If the project becomes ready to launch during the cours e of the internship, the intern will also be tasked with marketing the lending program.Assist in defining the housing study scope.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned by mentoring supervisors.


What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of at least six university semesters at any college or university.
  • Students enrolled in pre-law, business, entrepreneurship, finance, family finance, communication studies and education are encouraged to apply.
  • Critical thinking, self-direction and a passion to help individuals and families break the cycle of predatory lending.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • A strong desire to inspire, empower and educate.
  • Ability to effectively research and set up programs based on the research
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working with individuals, groups, and co-workers to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by previous leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students from NW Kansas are preferred. 

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • This position may require attendance at evening meetings, access to a personal vehicle with current insurance, and a valid driver’s license upon employment.

Salary & Benefits:

$20.00 per hour. 40 hours per week. Maximum 400 hours

Housing will be provided at the personal home of Joan Jerkovich. The housing will consist of a fully furnished above-the-garage one-bedroom apartment with private entrance.
