About This Role:

Through the First Impressions program, better and inclusive signage was identified as a need in the communities of Ellsworth and Wilson.  Improved and inclusive signage will make the communities more inviting to both visitors and its residents and increase the ability to attract future development and new residents. The development of the signage plan will take into consideration the unique heritage of each community and their local assets.

Internship Dates:

May 28, 2019 thru August 2, 2019 or as negotiated with K-State Research & Extension.

Location:

Ellsworth County, KS.

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Develop a detailed and inclusive signage plan for the communities of Ellsworth and Wilson in Ellsworth County
  • Travel to other locations across the state to gather ideas of existing well planned signage projects
  • Study and research the heritage and assets of the communities to assist in the development of a branded signage plan for the communities
  • Conduct community meetings to gather public input
  • Work with local manufacturers or suppliers to create detailed schematics and a cost analysis
  • Identify funding sources or a sponsorship plan to bring the project to fruition
  • Present the plan to the city councils for comment and approval
  • Attend county commission meetings, city council meetings and monthly economic development board meetings.
  • Participate in networking events hosted or attended by economic development such as community collaboration events, chamber coffees and chamber lunches
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned by mentoring supervisors.

                                                       

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of at least six university semesters at any college or university.
  • Students enrolled in graphic design, marketing, and community development and planning are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups, and through mass media and social media..
  • Ability to create renderings or schematic plans of the signage project
  • Ability to create a detailed timeline for the project Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working with individuals, groups, and co-workers to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by previous leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students from NW Kansas are preferred. 

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • This position will require travel connected with official duties, attendance at evening meetings, access to a personal vehicle with current insurance, and a valid driver’s license upon employment.

Salary & Benefits:

$20.00 per hour. 40 hours per week. Maximum 400 hours

Housing will be provided by the Smoky Hill Development Corporation.
