About This Role:

In 2012 a Republic County Housing Study was conducted by Fort Hays State University. The survey, along with major employers and the school districts expressed the need for varied housing options in Republic County. Republic County Economic Development is looking into conducting a new county wide housing study. The intern would help conduct the study, update the Housing Assessment Tool (HAT) data to identify community housing needs, and research options for infill, new development, and re-purposed downtown housing.

Internship Dates:

May 28, 2019 thru August 2, 2019 or as negotiated with K-State Research & Extension.


Courtland, KS

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Assist in defining the housing study scope.
  • Update the Housing Assessment Tool (HAT) data to identify community housing needs.
  • Research options for in-fill, new development and re-purposed downtown housing.
  • Provide oral and written reports to the Republic County Economic Development Board.
  • Community service or volunteering with a community organization is highly encouraged. This would be outside of the designated scope of work and working hours.
  • Participate in any professional staff development that may be available.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned by mentoring supervisors.


What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of at least six university semesters at any college or university.
  • Students enrolled in architecture, regional and community planning or economic development are encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups, and through mass media and social media.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working with individuals, groups, and co-workers to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by previous leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students from NW Kansas are preferred. 

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • This position will require travel connected with official duties, including attendance at evening meetings, access to a personal vehicle with current insurance, and a valid driver’s license upon employment.

Salary & Benefits:

$20.00 per hour. 40 hours per week. Maximum 400 hours

Housing will be provided through the Republic County Economic Development.
