About This Role:

In 2018, Jewell County hosted two interns that re-visualized downtown spaces in Mankato and Jewell through drawings and community conversations. This summer they wouldlike to take the next step by having an intern work with building owners in Mankato who want to continue the work that was conceptualized last year. Many of these building have roof and structural issues which need to be addressed.  In addition, the intern would assist with analyzing current housing structures to determine the feasibility of repair vs demolition. The Land Bank program was researched last year and this work would be continued again this year.

Internship Dates:

May 28, 2019 thru August 2, 2019 or as negotiated with K-State Research & Extension.

Location:

Mankato, KS.

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Work with businesses and building owners to determine structural issues which need to be addressed and methods of repair.
  • Analyze housing structures to determine the feasibility of repair vs demolition.
  • Work with the City of Mankato to develop plans for a downtown roof program, façade program, sidewalk improvements, lighting improvements, and street improvement.
  • Identify buildings throughout the county which would benefit from being placed in the Land Bank program 
  • Community service or volunteering with a community organization is highly encouraged. This would be outside of the designated scope of work and working hours.
  • Participate in any professional staff development that may be available.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned by mentoring supervisors.

                                                       

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of at least six university semesters at any college or university.
  • Students enrolled in architecture, structural engineering or construction science are encourage to apply.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups, and through mass media and social media..
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working with individuals, groups, and co-workers to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by previous leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students from NW Kansas are preferred. 

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • This position may require travel connected with official duties, including attendance at evening meetings, participation in out of county events, access to a personal vehicle with current insurance, and a valid driver’s license upon employment. The intern will be required to provide their own computer with design software.

Salary & Benefits:

$20.00 per hour. 40 hours per week. Maximum 400 hours

Housing will be provided in a newly renovated one-bedroom apartment in Mankato
