About This Role:

Currently the city utility systems are recorded on paper which could be misplaced or lost through fires, water or insect damage. The intern would be responsible for digitizing all utility lines, meters, transformers and other applicable date into a cloud-based Geographic Information System (GIS). Once developed, the intern would train city staff on usage and maintenance of the system.

May 28, 2019 thru August 2, 2019 or as negotiated with K-State Research & Extension.


Lucas, KS

Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Develop a digitized cloud-based GIS System for the utilities in Lucas, KS
  • Research various GIS systems, develop a comparison chart of various systems along with cost estimates, and make a recommendation of a system to purchase
  • Meet with city council and the Chamber of Commerce on a monthly basis to update on progress of system implementation
  • Train city staff on updating and maintaining the system
  • Develop social media posts to keep the community informed on progress of the project
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned by mentoring supervisors


What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of at least six university semesters at any college or university.
  • Students enrolled in technology, geosciences, or engineering are encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of GIS systems and related software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups, and through mass media and social media.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Experience working with individuals, groups, and co-workers to accomplish individual and/or group goals, as evidenced by previous leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Students from NW Kansas are preferred.  

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • This position will require attendance at evening meetings, access to a personal vehicle with current insurance, and a valid driver’s license upon employment.

Salary & Benefits:

$20.00 per hour. 40 hours per week. Maximum 400 hours

Housing will be provided and paid by the City of Lucas.
