About this Role:

The Institute of Computational Comparative Medicine (ICCM) and Department of Anatomy and Physiology within College of Veterinary Medicine are seeking applicants for a Fellow (Post Doc) to work in the Pharmacokinetic Modeling and Simulation Laboratory of Dr. Zhoumeng Lin. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for designing and developing physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models for drugs, environmental chemicals, and/or nanoparticles in animals and humans. This individual will also help develop a database for physiological parameters for food animals. The goal of these projects is to create new quantitative tools to help address issues related to food safety and risk assessment.

Duties / Responsibilities:

The incumbent of this position will be mainly responsible for the development and applications of physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Design and develop PBPK models for drugs in food-producing animals, including swine, beef cattle, dairy cows, sheep, goats, and chickens,
  • Design and develop PBPK models for environmental chemicals and nanoparticles in rodents and humans,
  • Convert the developed PBPK models to web-based interfaces,
  • Apply the developed PBPK models to help address issues related to food safety and risk assessment.


This individual will also help develop a physiological parameter database for food animals. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Collect and analyze physiological parameter values for food animals,
  • Help develop a database for physiological parameters for food animals,
  • Help link this developed database to the Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD) program.


Other responsibilities include:

  • Present research findings in professional conferences, such as Society of Toxicology, American Conference on Pharmacometrics, and American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics,
  • Write manuscripts toward publication in high quality peer-reviewed journals in the field of pharmacology and toxicology,
  • Help prepare documents for grant applications and progress reports.
  • Collaborate with other lab members and help on other computational modeling projects that are active in the lab, including quantitative systems pharmacology modeling projects, population-based nonlinear mixed effects pharmacokinetic (popPK or NLME-PK) modeling projects, and probabilistic risk assessment projects.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in pharmacometrics, pharmacology, toxicology, epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in which dissertation research was related to pharmacometric, pharmacokinetic, systems pharmacology, biostatistical, or bioinformatic modeling
  • Experience doing physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling, quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) modeling, population pharmacokinetic (popPK) modeling, dose-response modeling, biostatistical analysis of epidemiology/toxicology data, metabolomics analysis, or other relevant quantitative pharmacology and biostatistical skills
  • Experience with one of the following software programs, including MATLAB, R language, Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML), Pharmacometrics Markup Language (PharmML), Berkeley Madonna, acslX, Phoenix, PK-Sim, MoBi, Simcyp, or GastroPlus
  • Ability to professionally interact with collaborating scientists involved in these projects
  • Strong interest in computational pharmacology and toxicology modeling
  • Good verbal and written English skills
  • Willing to learn new knowledge and computational modeling techniques
