About This Role:

The Painter II works as part of a team to provide safe, well maintained, and appealing living and learning spaces.  Performs journeyman level painting work including interior and exterior prep work and application of paint in living spaces, offices and public spaces.  Performs some specialized painting; replace and repair masonry surfaces and tile; and epoxy floors. Serves as lead worker on assigned projects.

It takes a talented and dedicated staff to maintain quality living and learning facilities for students living on-campus.  The Painter II contributes to the HDS mission by:

  • Determines appropriate tools, equipment (colorant machine, paint shaker) and colorants and prepare paint for application.  Applies technical knowledge of mixing, blending and tinting to match and /or coordinate with existing surfaces.
  • Prepares and finishes drywall and plaster by taping, applying plaster or drywall compounds; matching textures, troweling patching, skim coating and sanding to eliminate flaws and to ensure properly prepared surface for application of finishing materials.  
  • Serves as lead worker of project crews.
  • Follows all Lead Safety requirements.
  • Prepares surfaces including furniture, metal, wood, masonry and/or drywall for priming and spray painting. Applies primer and various custom finishes (poly mix, enamels, clear coats, etc.) using airless, conventional or HVLP spray equipment. 
  • Prepare surfaces for and applies epoxy floors.
  • Plans and schedules spray finish activities.
  • Installs cabinets, back splashes, medicine cabinets, and other fixtures as needed.
  • Replaces and/or repairs masonry surfaces, quarry and ceramic tile.  Finishes surfaces by using proper materials and equipment to preserve and protect against damage and deterioration.
  • Cleans, repairs and properly stores tools and equipment to ensure security, safety, and easy access. Uses electronic work order system to acquire work requests and maintain records of work performed.
  • May be assigned other duties including replacing and installing glass. 

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years of painting experience at the journeyman level
  • High school graduation/GED
  • Knowledge of painting techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in the trade and the ability to apply knowledge in practical applications
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety requirements
  • Ability to train others, coordinate, schedule, estimate labor and material, and maintain accurate records
  • Ability to interpret project from sketches, prints, and specifications
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Certificates of pulmonary function test and physical examination may be required.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • Requires valid driver’s license upon employment.  Completion of KSU Lead Safety program required within one year of employment and annually thereafter.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work including considerable lifting.

Salary Range/ Pay Rate:

$15.99 - $24.78 per hour

Actual salary will be determined based on the candidate’s experience, education, internal equity, and departmental funding. Salary offers are typically between the $15.99 and $20.38 of the pay rate range. The range indicated includes both the typical hiring range and potential future progression.
