About This Role:

The department of Plant Pathology is seeking applicants for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the lab of Dr. Jesse Poland to develop and implement novel high-throughput phenotyping approaches for plant breeding programs.  The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to independently design and collaboratively implement research experiments focused on use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for remote sensing of wheat field trials, including multispectral and hyperspectral imaging and high-resolution imaging, followed by analysis of imaging data and phenotypic trait prediction.  The position will require synthesis of the current state-of-the-art in the discipline, comprehensive understanding of appropriate experimental design, and subsequent analysis and bioinformatics applications.  Research results must be assessed and analyzed in a cohesive and coherent manner and presented to stakeholders.  The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to lead preparation and publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts that present research findings from the project.  The successful candidate will work closely with other members of the lab and with external collaborators and stakeholders and will help create an environment that fosters collegiality, diversity and teamwork.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Remote Sensing, Geography, Plant Science, Plant Breeding and Genetics or closely related field at the time of appointment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong programming and data management skills
  • Knowledge, background, or experience in image processing and geospatial analysis
  • Experience applying remote sensing to agricultural
  • Demonstrated experience in research projects in high-throughput phenotyping
  • Extensive knowledge of GIS and image-analysis software packages
  • Experience in precision-agriculture technologies (GPS/GIS) and remote-sensing software ENVI, ERDAS, ArcGIS, QGIS, and hardware UAVs
  • Self-directed research planning and execution
