About this Role:

This Veterinary Nurse will help maintain efficient Exotic Pet, Wildlife, and Zoological Medicine Service by providing technical and minor instructional skills as necessary to provide services in the Veterinary Health Center. A primary mission of the hospital is to provide quality medical services for teaching, research, and clients within the surrounding area. In addition, the nurse will assist in the immobilization, diagnostics, procedures, and treatment of wild animals that are submitted by the public and to animals maintained at regional zoos. This position is also responsible for coordination of animal treatments; instruct, train, and oversee students and employees in approved treatment techniques.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Provide nurse support for the Exotic Pet, Wildlife, and Zoological Medicine Service including animal restraint, while obtaining and assisting students in obtaining specific diagnostic samples and performing therapeutic procedures. These samples and procedures may include but are not limited to skin scrapings, impression smears/cytology samples, tissue aspirates, bacterial cultures, blood samples, cystocentesis, ear cleaning/flushing, injections, and sedation. Other procedures that the incumbent will perform include assisting in the care for client-owned exotic animals and native wildlife, preparation for procedures in exotic and zoo animals, dentistries, supportive care, and endoscopy. Interpretation of certain samples such as in house heartworm test, FeLV/FIV test, and fecal exams.
  • Assist students, house officers and faculty with record keeping and input of charges into the hospital information system. Maintain clean and well stocked exotics ward, operating room, and examination rooms at the VHC as well as Sunset Zoo Clinic. Responsible for overseeing inventory, diets, supplies, and equipment for the VHC exotics space, and Sunset Zoo Clinic. Stock should be rotated and checked for expiration.
  • Nurse will assist clinicians with client education and case follow up. This includes handling prescription refills, and sending test results to referring veterinarians. As needed, update the Student Orientation Handout, emergency contact lists, and ward forms. As fiscal year increases occur, update surgery sheets and price quotes accordingly.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a registered paraprofessional under the authority of the Kansas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners within six months of employment.

For a Veterinary Nurse I:  Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

For a Veterinary Nurse II:  Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and two years of relevant experience.

For a Veterinary Nurse III:  Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and five years of relevant experience as a state credentialed veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, CVT).

  • Must possess a valid drivers license once employed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work with exotic pets, wildlife, zoo animals, and general veterinary medical hospital equipment
  • Ability to work with personal computer
  • Ability to handle and restrain small and large animals
  • Willingness and ability to master new techniques
  • Excellent communication skills, strong work ethic and a positive, constructive attitude
  • Experience or interest in exotic and zoo animals
  • Teaching experience will be considered an asset to this position
