About This Role:

The Kansas State Polytechnic campus is seeking a dedicated Laboratory Manager for the Bulk Solids Innovation Center. The position will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the BSIC, including equipment, testing, and overseeing the work of Student Interns. As experience is gained, the position will evaluate customer material samples and make recommendations about designing material handling systems for those materials. Over time, the Laboratory Manager will become an expert, recognized in both industry and academia, in a variety of Bulk Solid handling technologies.

About the
Bulk Solids Innovation Center:

The Kansas State University Bulk Solids Innovation Center provides innovative solutions in bulk solids storage, flow, conveying, and handling. Bulk solids make up more than 80 percent of items transported around the world, yet formal education and research concerning these materials is not completely understood. How solid materials behave in transport and processing requires more examination. The Center provides a wide range of value-added solutions and services to enhance efficiency and productivity to a variety of industries - food, chemicals, minerals, pharmaceuticals, and plastics. From research, education, training, access to technology, and bench to full-scale testing of dry bulk solids, this unique Center identifies and solves real-world industrial problems. 

This university-level research center is the only one of its kind in North America.

The facility is comprised of:

  • Two-story 13,000 ft² (1,208 m²) building
  • Six laboratories for university and industry-sponsored research
  • Training and conference rooms
  • Material properties testing laboratory with full range of instruments
  • Full-scale bulk solids test bay

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • One to three years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of basic gas laws, material properties, chemistry, and physics
  •  A technical degree is desired; Engineering preferred
  • Have an eagerness to learn bulk material handling, gravity flow of solids, particulate air filtration, and pneumatic conveying technologies
  • General understanding of customer service, especially in an industrial setting
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, with potential for writing technical articles and making formal training presentations
  • Ability to set up, operate, and troubleshoot basic mechanical and electrical devices, instrumentation, and controls
  • Ability to use hand and power tools; not afraid to get dirty
  • Ability to learn and successfully use software programs as required to fulfill the requirements of the job
  • Ability to maintain neat and orderly, hazard-free work area

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • Must be able to lift/move 60 pounds and wear necessary safety equipment, when required

Salary Range:

$55,000 - $65,000, based on experience and education.
