About this Role:

The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant. This position is responsible for performing tests on various analytes such as serum, whole blood, plasma, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and mild using agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID), ELISA, indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA), agglutination, radial immunodiffusion (RID), and SNAP to detect titers or disease and enter findings into computer. Other responsibilities include setting up, adjusting, maintaining, and cleaning laboratory equipment and maintaining the quality system through document reviews as well as corrective action responses and ensuring the quality of the test results.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Serological Assays: Perform testing (including Laboratory Information Management, sample preparation, reagent preparation, equipment calibration,and serial dilution as necessary) according to approved protocols or manufactures specifications for the following assays/methods:
    • AGAR GEL IMMUNODIFFUSION (AGID) for Avian Influenza {Al), Blue Tongue (BT), Bovine Leukemia (BLV), Caprine Arthritis-Encephalitis (CAD), Ovine Progressive Pneumonia (OPP), Epizootic Hemmorrhagic (EHD), Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), lmmunodiffusion and (ID) Fungals
    • ELISA tests for Blue Tongue (BT), Bovine Leukemia (BLV), Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis and Maedi-Visinia Virus (CAE-MVV), Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis (Johne''s), Anaplasma, Bovine Pregnancy, and Toxoplasmosis
    • INDIRECT FLUORESCENT ANTIBODY (IFA): Ehrlichia canis, Lyme, Leishmania infantum, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
    • AGGLUTINATION TESTS: Canine Brucellosis and Brucella abortis Perform latex agglutination tests for Crypotococcus
    • RADIAL IMMUNODIFFUSION (RID): for bovine and camelid
    • SNAP test for foal lgG and feline leukemia (Felv) and feline immunodeficiency (FIV) combo
    • LEPTOSPORISIS

QUALITY SYSTEM:

  • Perform quality assessment and quality control documentation needed for the Lab to stay in compliance with regulations
  • SOP creation, review and updating
  • Oversee maintenance and inventory of equipment in Serology Lab
  • Corrective Actions
  • Participate in formal proficiency testing programs specific to test methods used within the laboratory
  • Obtained required training and get lab ready for inspections
  • Serology trainer for student workers and new personnel

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

  • Assisting customers via phone, email, and fax
  • Provide assistance with clients concerning test selection, result interpretation and how that relates to the testing the laboratory does

LAB MAINTENANCE:

  • Prepare reagents and solutions for use in diagnostic tests
  • Primary technician responsible for maintenance and upkeep of Leptospirosis cultures
  • Record temperatures and equipment readiness for QA/QC program
  • Filling tip boxes and restocking of physical inventory necessary for the function of the laboratory
  • General upkeep and cleaning of the laboratory when necessary

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient computer skills including experience with databases, spreadsheets, word processing and data entry
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Two or more years of laboratory experience
  • Demonstrates proficiency with fluorescence microscopy methods and biosafety training and practices
  • Bachelor of Science with emphasis in microbiology, virology, and serology preferred
