About this Role:

The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) invites applications for two, 1-year, term Clinical Pathology internship positions . The VDL Internship program is a one-year, full time position that provides veterinarians who have a special interest in diagnostic medicine an opportunity to experience the wide variety of career opportunities available in this broad area of veterinary medicine. Interns are required to declare up to two areas of emphasis within the first six months of the program.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Time in the position will be divided equally between day-time training in the various diagnostic laboratories and independently performing after-hours on-call duties in the areas of clinical pathology and to a lesser extent necropsy and bacteriology. On-call duties  within the Clinical Pathology Laboratory include, but are not limited to: logging samples into the laboratory, operating the Siemens Advia Hematology Analyzer to generate partial CBC results, operating the Cobas C501® Chemistry Analyzer to generate serum chemistry results, operating the NOVA Stat Profile® Analyzer to generate blood gas and other chemistry results, completing partial urinalysis results (physical and chemical components), operating the Coulter®Z2™ Analyzer to generate cell count results for pleural, synovial and peritoneal fluids, preparing blood films and cytologic preparations for analysis by medical technologists or pathologists, and undergoing extensive training in methods of sample handling, processing, and analysis. After-hours duties include but are not limited to: assisting in the receiving of whole -animal specimens and large packaged specimens for the Necropsy & Receiving area and setting up microbiologic cultures submitted by the KSU Veterinary Health Center.
  • Day-time training will consist of a rotating schedule to include each individual laboratory within KSVDL. Each laboratory may have specific objectives for completion including, but not limited to: reading assignments, safety training, experience with basic laboratory techniques, and a comprehensive review or examination upon completion of that specific lab experience.
  • Participation in rounds, 1 publication in a peer reviewed journal, and 1 presentation, preferably at a pathology meeting (regional or national) are required for successful completion of the program. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Suitable candidates must have:

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine by time of appointment
  • Interest in Diagnostic Medicine with a focus in Clinical Pathology
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Practice experience is preferred
