About This Role:

Kansas State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Department Head and Professor, Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources in the College of Agriculture. The Department, which is composed of 20 faculty, 21 staff, and 40 graduate student appointments, seeks an energetic, visionary, and creative individual who will lead the faculty, staff, and students in their research, teaching, extension, and service missions.

The Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources has an excellent, highly-ranked faculty committed to research, teaching, and extension programs in a wide diversity of disciplines including turf, woody and herbaceous ornamentals, vegetable and fruit crops, environmental stress physiology, sustainable crop production, landscape management, urban food systems, natural resource management, riparian forest management, park management, and wildlife and outdoor enterprise management.  B.S. degrees are offered in Horticulture, Park Management and Conservation, and Wildlife and Outdoor Enterprise Management with current combined undergraduate enrollment of about 290 students.  Masters and Ph.D. degrees are offered in many areas of specialization including Urban Food Systems with 26 M.S. and 13 Ph.D. students. The KSU Gardens and four off-campus research and extension centers are components of the Department.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

The Successful Candidate Will:

  • Foster excellence in the Department's missions of teaching, research and extension within the land grant university system, with vision that inspires faculty, staff and students to excel in Horticulture, Park Management and Conservation, and Wildlife and Outdoor Enterprise Management.
  • Promote quality instruction in undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Implement long-range strategic plans for the Department to further enhance strong, nationally-recognized teaching, research, and extension programming in accordance with K-State 2029 (www.k­state.edu/2025/ ).
  • Oversee the $8 million annual budget of the department and assist in generating extramural support for departmental activities.
  • Recruit and retain outstanding, productive faculty, staff and students
  • Evaluate, mentor, and promote professional development of faculty, staff and students.
  • Work and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, university administrators, extension personnel, stakeholders, alumni and friends.
  • Advocate for the Department to diverse stakeholder groups, the college, university, state and nation.
  • Actively involve faculty in the decision-making process, using appointed and elected committees when appropriate.
  • Maintain and enhance facilities such as the KSU Gardens, greenhouse complex, and off campus research stations.
  • Create an environment that fosters diversity, collegiality, teamwork, innovation and the ability to work in a multicultural setting across diverse disciplines.
  • Continue personal professional development in administration, and research, teaching, and/or extension.

Required Requirements:

  • Earned doctorate in Horticulture, Natural Resources, or a related discipline.
  • Credentials for appointment at rank of full professor.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, including administrative, personnel management, budgeting, communication skills, grantsmanship, and the ability to represent the department to scientific and industry/stakeholder groups.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching, research, extension, and service.
  • Experience in assessing priorities and adapting to change with creativity and innovation.
  • Commitment to expanding diversity in the department and college community.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in teaching, research, extension and/or international programs in a land grant university.
  • Leadership experience. 
  • An outstanding professional record of achievement.
