About This Role:

This Farm Manager/Poultry Unit Manager position is vital to the KSU Poultry Unit's success. This position collaborates with researchers in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry along with others across campus.

This position is responsible for managing the KSU Poultry Unit farm and game bird facility.  Research focuses on basic and applied research projects with laying hens, broilers, turkeys, pheasant, and quail.  Specific tasks include managing daily operations and maintenance of the facility, construction of indoor research pens and outdoor flight areas.

The incumbent will be responsible for interacting with the public via tours, stock sales, grant sponsors, campus courses and occasional producer meetings. This position requires handling of live animals, moving heavy items, handling and mixing feed components, indoor and outdoor work, general maintenance of buildings and research equipment, tractor and skid steer work, and repairs of animal pens.

This position will be collecting research samples and data such as excreta and tissue samples; routine analysis of feedstuffs as well as statistical analysis and reporting of research results on spreadsheets.  The incumbent will have primary responsibility for maintaining accurate and detailed study records of the facilities and will be responsible for ordering supplies, balancing a budget, maintaining inventories, application of quality control procedures, implementation of good laboratory practices and proper safety procedures, assisting graduate students in their research activities, as well as training and supervision of undergraduate student employees.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S. in Animal Sciences, Wildlife Biology, Zoology or related field and three to five years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with laboratory procedures relating to chemical and physical analysis of feeds.
  • Demonstrated capabilities for project management with experience with avian species.
  • Previous experience with data collection and record-keeping.
  • Demonstrated capability of making routine repairs, updates, and remodeling of physical facilities.
  • MS in Animal Science, Wildlife Biology, Zoology or related field.
  • Previous experience with supervision of employees, working in an animal research facility.
  • Experience conducting experiments according to Good Clinical Practices (VICH GL9) guidelines, as well as experience with documentation of procedures required for successful completion of INAD (Investigation New Animal Drug) studies.
