About This Role:

The Director of Benefits directs and leads the benefits function for Human Capital Services (HCS) and the University. Serves as the benefits team leader and is responsible for the supervision and development of benefits team members. This role also serves on the leadership team of HCS, advising on benefits strategy and the overall strategy and direction of HCS. The Director may represent HCS on numerous university committees and task forces and is seen by those groups as having authority and expertise.

This role ensures regulatory and legal compliance while managing the risk of all benefits programs. Serving as the recognized expert, exercises independent judgment regularly on high-level matters, interpreting a regulation, policy, and law concerning benefits programs, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), etc. Develops, writes, and designs policies and procedures and chapters for university handbooks and is responsible for interpreting those policies.

The Director of Benefits:

  • Directs and leads the benefits function for Human Capital Services (HCS) and the University. This includes but is not limited to Retirement plans (both defined benefit and defined contribution), voluntary savings plans (403(b), 457 plan, 529 plan), Basic (covered) life insurance, voluntary life insurance, health insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) & Health Savings Accounts (HSA), leave programs (including shared leave and other special leave programs), Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), tuition assistance, long-term disability, workers compensation, phased retirement, limited health care bridge, etc.
  • Develops and directs strategies on internal and external customer service.
  • Responsible for the budget expenditures and allocation for the Benefits team.
  • Serves as the university representative to benefits providers and vendors, Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) committees, and state agencies with authority to represent the University’s voice. Works regularly with those leaders to solve issues, develop a strategy, and position the University in the best place concerning employee benefits programs.
  • Advises local agencies (Student Union and Athletics) regarding their retirement programs and plans.
  • Designs and implements new and updated communication strategies for benefit programs and wellness initiatives to provide K-State employees with the best possible information about their benefits programs.
  • Measures and analyzes the success of programs offered by Human Capital Services (HCS) benefits. Specifically, measures/analyzes the success of New Employee Orientation, holistic wellness initiatives, communication mediums, etc.
  • Responsible for assessing technology and reporting system needs within Benefits and strategizes best practices for the total rewards systems approach.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Five or more years of HR-related experience, including two years of supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with retirement plans including state defined benefit plans and defined contribution & voluntary retirement plans
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of key applicable federal, state, benefits administration; specifically including the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
  • Demonstrated experience supervising others
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a customer-centric approach and culture
  • Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively and team-building to accomplish goals
  • Ability to effectively communicate professionally and courteously with diverse individuals and groups
  • Experience creating and facilitating benefits training
  • Experience managing a budget
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Human resource professional certification: PHR, SHRM-CP, SPHR, or SHRM-SCP

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

$78,000-$83,000 Annually
