About this Role:

The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Fellow (Post Doc).  The incumbent has the responsibility of developing and performing laboratory experiments using Illumina and Nanpore next generation sequencing platforms. In addition, the incumbent will develop different bioinformatics pipelines to be used in combination with NGS results. To achieve the objectives, job responsibilities include; handling and processing various animal specimens, nucleic acid extraction of both RNA and DNA using different nucleic acid extraction methods, real-time PCR detection of a variety of animal pathogens, viral and bacterial culture and isolation, identification and characterization, conducting scientific literature searches, installing programs on Linux based servers, R language, bioinformatics analyses of NGS output.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Next Generation sequencing using Nanopore and Illumina platforms of inactivated and live viral samples. Facilitate laboratory bench work needed for molecular diagnostic test improvement and development. This involves the completion of complex, multi-step laboratory procedures including nucleic acid extraction and purification of both RNA and DNA from specimens of different sources, library preparation, machine run and data analysis for next generation sequencing, PCR detection of various pathogens, animal cell culture, and viral culture and isolation.
  • Develop bioinformatic pipelines for NGS applications. This includes installing and running software on Linux and Windows operating systems, running pipelines with R language and communicating the significance of the output. Help the PI in data analysis that can be used as preliminary data for grant applications.
  • Review of literature is required for the identification of molecular targets that can be used for diagnostic assay designs, and review methodology-related literature for the application and modification of relevant methods that can be used in laboratory procedures. Supervise and lead other researchers on the improved or developed techniques.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in NGS, Bioinformatics or a related field
  • Corresponding to working in a laboratory at BSL-2 level (e.g. wearing the required personal protective equipment)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong background in bioinformatics, experience of conducting NGS analyses, and demonstrated research skills
  • Teaching, mentoring, or supervisory experience

Salary Range / Pay Rate:
