About this Role:

This Veterinary Nurse position plans, organizes, directs and controls technical work in the small animal ICU, with majority of time dedicated to the Emergency service of KSU-VHC during an established shift. Employee maintains equipment and supply status in the SA ICU area and is responsible for providing triage, emergency and critical care in this work area. Responsible for cleanliness of the work area and assures that supply are not outdated. Monitors medical records and ICU orders of patients for completeness, accuracy and financial accountability. This position is also responsible for coordination of animal treatments; instruct, train and supervise students and employees in approved treatment technique.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Provide after hour (evening & rotating weekends) emergency care for patients arriving to the KSU VHC. Orient students completing emergency rotation in ICU with regards to specific processes, triage, equipment and pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, nursing technical skills, and general nursing care. Supervise and assist students in attending to treatments and procedures on hospitalized animals and emergency patients. Participate in other teaching and demonstrations as directed by ICU supervisor or other clinical faculty. Assist students with client communication and perform necessary diagnostics in exam rooms as directed by clinical staff. Assist clinicians in treating and performing diagnostic procedures on the emergency patients.
  • Provide primary nursing care and perform treatments for patients in ICU as directed by the clinician’s verbal and written orders for the case. Assist clinicians in treating and performing diagnostic procedures on the patients in ICU. This activity will be reviewed daily by clinicians with patients in SA-ICU, weekly by supervisor, and as required by the Hospital Director, for results achieved.
  • Training of new employees. Be familiar with emergency equipment, supplies, and pharmaceuticals and their location within the KSU-VHC. Responsible for stocking of pharmaceuticals and supplies in SA-ICU and on associated crash carts. Routinely check for, and replace, outdated pharmaceuticals. Assure that needed items are available at all times. Service, clean, and maintain monitoring equipment and other intensive care support equipment. Responsible for thorough, general cleaning of the SA-ICU area on a daily basis. Performance will be reviewed by the supervisor and the Hospital Director for results achieved.
  • Monitor medical records and SA-ICU orders of ICU patients for completeness, accuracy, and financial accountability. Become proficient with the hospital management system so that medical and financial information may be easily entered into terminals in Small Animal ICU areas by clinicians, you, or veterinary students assigned to the SA-ICU. Performance will be reviewed by the supervisor and Hospital Director for results achieved
  • Perform other duties in the KSU-VHC as requested by the Anesthesiology/ICU staff, supervisor, Hospital Director by following procedures and protocol developed for the KSU-VHC. Performance will be reviewed by the supervisor and Hospital Director for results achieved.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Must be registered as a paraprofessional under the authority of the Kansas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners within six months of appointment.

  • Veterinary Nurse I: Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association
  • Veterinary Nurse II: Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and two years of relevant experience
  • Veterinary Nurse III: Completion of a two year college program in veterinary and animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and five years of relevant experience as a state credentialed veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, CVT)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in Emergency and Critical Care
  • Teaching or training experience
  • Ability to make quick decisions and express good judgment
  • Self motivated to learn new nursing skills and attend continuing education opportunities
  • Ability to perform in a fast paced environment with a large case load
  • An individual who understands the importance of patient mental health while in the hospital
  • Strong multitasking skills
  • Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • A self starter who is constantly looking for productive ways to fill down time
  • Flexibility and willingness to help other teammates
  • Reliable individual who can be depended on by other members of the team
  • Physically able to handle, restrain and provide medical services to domestic animals
  • Ability to maintain and use ordinary veterinary medical hospital equipment
  • Knowledge of standard emergency veterinary medical procedures
  • Ability to perform word processing and data entry procedures on a personal computer

Other Requirements:

Physical Demands:

Position frequently involves light work. It is occasionally necessary to perform medium to heavy work associated with transporting, pushing, or pulling of animals and /or equipment. Must be physically able to handle, restrain, and provide medical treatments to domestic animals. Must be able to monitor heart sounds (hearing) through a stethoscope, monitor patient vital signs on a TV screen and /or medical monitors (sight), insert catheters, syringe needles, etc. (finger dexterity) as prescribed, and express instructions quickly (talking) in emergency situations.
Surgical instrumentation- used several times daily.

$ 15.42 - $ 29.64 per hour
