 About this Role

Assistant Professor of Turfgrass/Landscape Management, Full-time (12-month), tenure-track (60% teaching, 40% research).

The successful candidate will support our undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, and conduct research that focuses on turfgrass and landscape management.



  • Support the undergraduate program in horticulture by teaching courses in turfgrass and landscape management, including Basic Turfgrass Culture (3 cr.), Horticultural Irrigation (3 cr.), Turfgrass Disease and Weed Management (1 cr. each, in alternate years), and coordinating the laboratory sections for Principles of Horticultural Science.
  • Advise undergraduate students in the Golf and Sports Turf Operations curriculum, with additional advising of Landscape Horticulture students as needed.
  • Advise the GCSAA student chapter, which is the primary club for golf course/sports turf students.
  • Participate in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL), through course and curriculum development, peer-reviewed publications, and/or collaborative activities that are validated by peers and communicated to others in the field.


  • Develop an externally funded and nationally recognized research program focused on turfgrass and/or landscape management issues.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Collaborate on research projects with on- and off-campus faculty (off-campus faculty are located at the Olathe Horticulture Research and Extension Center, Olathe, KS, and the John C. Pair Horticulture Center, Haysville, KS).
  • Participate in and assist with the annual Kansas Turfgrass and Landscape Conference (December), and the Kansas Turf and Ornamentals Field Day (August).
  • Contribute to graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing results with graduate students.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in horticulture or closely related plant science discipline
  • Qualification for membership on the K-State Graduate Faculty upon hire (earned Ph.D. and published at least one research article in a refereed journal)
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching
  • Demonstrated excellence in research
  • Demonstrated experience in experimental design and statistical analysis
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work as a member of multidisciplinary teams including stakeholders
  • Experience in turfgrass and landscape management practices
  • Strong commitment to expanding and fostering diversity

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and/or graduate education including scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Experience that demonstrates ability to develop an externally funded research program that contributes to knowledge of turfgrass and landscape management
  • Demonstrated ability to publish research in peer-reviewed journals
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues, industry, and turfgrass/landscape associations on topics related to turfgrass/landscape management
