About This Role:

The Extension Associate will respond to questions from Kansas Extension personnel and produce growers related to produce safety and assist with regulatory requirements.  Provide assistance with carrying out on-farm produce safety assessments and on-farm food safety plans.  Coordinate and implement produce safety training across the state of Kansas.  Create and maintain relationships with many local and state partners to ensure adequate training is available.  Some nights and weekends and overnight travel may be required.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree with knowledge of produce safety as evidenced by academic courses, professional development and/or professional experience appropriate to the needs of the position.

Evidence of strong academic and/or professional performance as documented by college transcripts, acceptance into a graduate program or documented success in increasingly responsible professional positions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Horticulture, Food Science or closely related field
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups and through mass media
  • Proficiency with common computer programs for word and data processing
  • Willingness to perform training and visit farms in various parts of Kansas (travel)
  • Experience in conducting Extension and/or outreach programs
  • Training experience in produce safety
  • Extensive experience working with small-scale commercial fruit and vegetable production
  • Experience in working with multiple stakeholder groups related to produce safety

-Applicants are expected to have at least a basic knowledge of the following:

  • Produce Safety Scientific Knowledge and Experience
  • Fruit and Vegetable Production Knowledge
  • Effective Training Delivery, and
  • Knowledge of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule



Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • Access to a personal vehicle and the ability to obtain/maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Some nights and weekends and overnight travel may be required

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

$58,038 - $75,000
