About This Role:

The Northwest Research-Extension Center in Colby, Kansas is seeking an Extension Specialist for Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS). The person selected for the position will provide leadership for Extension agents in NW Kansas providing research and evidence-based programming in FCS, including, but not limited to, family life, aging, nutrition, food safety, parenting, communication, financial management, leadership, health and safety. The person selected will provide transformational leadership and support for extension initiatives, including community-based education and policy system and environmental change (PSE) approaches that address social determinates of health.

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop PSE approaches, programming, and educational materials for outcome-based FCS programming, with at least one area of FCS expertise.
  • Provide visionary leadership to Extension Agents, Extension Boards, local Program Development Committees, and community leaders in improving the health and wellbeing of Kansans through community assessments, strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation. Work with local unit extension leaders and staff to expand and enhance program accessibility and equity.
  • Provide leadership for at least one state-wide extension program or initiative.
  • Provide training opportunities for local K-State Research and Extension staff including evaluation of local unit and area FCS program effectiveness; program evaluation; leadership development; new agent consultation and orientation; developing collaborations including resource development; and supporting local unit personnel in creating and carrying out personal professional development plans.
  • Serve as a liaison between the local unit, regional, and state FCS staff to promote effective and efficient communication and teamwork. Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with other state or regional organizations and groups to help further the K-State Research and Extension mission.
  • Demonstrated success in professional development growth opportunities.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in a Family and Consumer Sciences subject matter or closely related field.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.  
  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish shared goals.  
  • Demonstrated ability in designing, promoting, implementing, and evaluating community-based initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize electronic communication and computer applications necessary for program development, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  
  • Demonstrated ability in coaching professionals and providing professional development.
  • Demonstrated success in partnerships and collaborations with external organizations and agencies.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience with Cooperative Extension.
  • Education, training and interest in adult development and aging, family and child development, or community health.
  • PhD in an FCS subject matter or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated success in extramural grant writing.
