About This Role:

Assistant Professor – Crop Science teaching (70%) and research (30%). The Agronomy Department at Kansas State University is seeking an individual to develop an exemplary and innovative teaching and research program in crop science. Primary teaching responsibilities consist of an introductory course in crop science that includes a laboratory (AGRON 220) in fall and spring semesters, a plant and seed identification/seed analysis course (AGRON 350) in spring, and one additional course in their area of expertise. Teaching responsibilities also include coaching the Crops Judging and NACTA Contest Teams, youth programming and recruitment, undergraduate advising, and advising the departmental undergraduate student club associated with the national organization (SASES) within ASA/CSSA/SSSA. The incumbent is expected to integrate their teaching responsibilities with an externally-funded research program in their area of expertise, training graduate students, and publishing peer-reviewed scholarly work in both research and teaching/learning. The research focus can include any discipline within agronomy and should capitalize on opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration as part of the university’s strategic initiatives in Food and Agriculture Systems Innovation and in Digital Agriculture and Advanced Analytics. The candidate must be able to work in a multicultural setting and create an environment that fosters collegiality, diversity, and teamwork.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in agronomy, crop science, or closely related field
  • Proven instructional excellence and effectiveness in teaching crop science with teaching experience at the college level
  • Ability to inspire and provide leadership development of undergraduates
  • Interest in scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Clear potential for securing extramural funding
  • Ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Firm commitment to expanding and fostering diversity in the department

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in leading or working as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Record of innovative research commensurate with current career level
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with current career level
  • Experience in field research with agronomic crops and crop production systems
  • Experience in grant writing and obtaining extramural funding commensurate with current career level
  • Skills to effectively use electronic media to communicate technical agronomic information
