About This Role:

The Veterinary Health Center within the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for a Lead Veterinary Nurse, Student Coordinator position. This position plans, organizes, directs and controls technical work in the SA-ICU of the KSU-VHC during an established shift. Employee supervises student staff. Employee maintains equipment and supply status in the SA-ICU area and is responsible for assisting clinicians and senior veterinary students as they provide critical care to clients cases in this work area. Responsible for cleanliness, accuracy and financial accountability. The position is also responsible for coordination of animal treatments; instruct, train and supervise students and employees in approved treatment techniques.


  • Provide supervision for the ICU student workers; including preparation of the schedule. Recruitment, hiring, onboarding and training of student workers.
  • Provide technical support for Small Animal ICU (SA ICU) & ER patients at KSU-VHC. Knowledgeable in primary nursing care and treatments for patients in ICU as directed by the clinician’s verbal and written orders for the case. Assist clinicians in treating and performing diagnostic procedures on the patients in ICU and Emergency areas. Perform other duties in the Kansas State University-Veterinary Health Center (KSU-VHC) as requested by the Anesthesiology/ICU staff, supervisor or Hospital Director by following procedures and protocol developed for the KSU-VHC.
  • Be familiar with emergency equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals and their location within the KSU-VHC. Assure that needed items are available at all times. Service, clean and maintain monitoring equipment and other intensive care support equipment. Responsible for thorough, general cleaning of the SA-ICU area on a daily basis.
  • Monitor medical records and SA-ICU orders of ICU patients for completeness, accuracy and financial accountability. Become proficient with the hospital information system so that medical and financial information may be easily entered into terminals in SA-ICU areas by clinicians, you or veterinary students assigned to SA-ICU. Performance will be reviewed by the supervisor and Hospital Administrator for results achieved.
  • Serve as second contact for ICU staff in the event ICU nursing supervisor is unavailable.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires completion of a two-year college program in veterinary or animal technology accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and five years of relevant experience as a state credentialed veterinary technician (RVT, LVT, CVT). 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma & 2 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelors Degree
