About This Role:

The Feed and Pet Food program within the Department of Grain Science and Industry seeks applications from qualified individuals for the position of Research Assistant or Associate Professor in Pet Food Science. This is a 12-month non-tenure-track, annually renewable full-time (1.0 FTE) position with 80% research, 10% teaching and 10% service. The Pet Food Program was created in 2012 as an expansion of the Feed Science and Management degree and as a cross-campus faculty led program with partnership from the pet food industry. A new strategic initiative intends to expand the program overall with addition of research laboratory capabilities, dog and cat units, and personnel. Specifically, an additional faculty member is being recruited with special skills in pet food processing, safety and (or) nutrition. The successful individual identified for this position will be an ambitious and enthusiastic individual contributor and a team player with exceptional communication skills, an understanding of the pet food industry research needs, an ability to organize and execute research and publish scholarly works, and the ability to teach principles of pet food processing to students and industry professionals. Potential areas of research include, but are not limited to, pet food processing and engineering, pet food safety and risk mitigation research, new pet food development systems, nutrition of pet foods, alternative feeds/foods for companion animals, novel ingredients, sustainability in pet food production, and agro-industrial processing and value-added development opportunities with application in pet foods.

 

Essential Job Duties: The successful candidate will……

  • Seek and obtain extramural funding from the allied pet food industry, trade organizations, and (or) state and federal granting agencies.
  • Conduct scholarly research that addresses the needs of pets, owners, and the industry
  • Support undergraduate and graduate student research and teaching
  • Assist with the expansion of facilities and equipment capabilities.
  • Become an integral and engaged member of the Grain Science & Industry faculty

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned PhD (at time of employment) in grain science, food science, nutrition, animal science, meat science or relevant discipline.
  • A record of self-directed research and scholarly publication
  • Possess a demonstrated ability to think and organize projects, recruit, staff and train students and professionals.
  • Must have research management and regulatory experience in the food/feed/pet food industry
  • Demonstrated ability to teach students in a classroom and to adult learners in the field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to speak English clearly
  • A strong commitment to fostering and expanding diversity and collegiality

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in microbiological and immunological methodologies associated with pet food safety.
  • Proficiency in nutritional analytical and processing methodologies commensurate with a given discipline
  • Experience with project management, personnel management, and care and use of animals in research

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
  • Must be willing to promote pet food scientific advances in Kansas and Nationally
  • Must have an interest in communicating and training adult learners and industry professionals through short courses
  • Ability to publish research in peer reviewed research journals and summarize via extension bulletins and trade publications.
