About This Role:

Kansas State University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to serve as Library Help Student Supervisor (LHSS). The LHSS serves as the primary supervisor for 12-15 Student Specialists - these student employees serve as the first contact for patrons at Hale Library Help, the library’s main public service point, so it is imperative that they offer excellent patron service as they assist patrons through circulation, reference, troubleshooting, and general inquiries. The LHSS meets frequently with the supervisory team (comprised of three User Services Specialists) to coordinate the team’s training and mentoring of the Student Specialists, and to explore opportunities to improve user services.

The LHSS strives to provide all library users with excellent customer service while effectively connecting library users to information, assessing and developing services for a changing and diverse population, and advocating for all library users’ needs. A core component of the position is to provide access and reference services to library patrons who visit Hale Library’s Help Desk or who contact the Libraries’ help services via phone, chat, or e-mail.

This full-time, non-tenure track position reports to the Head of the Library User Services Department. To be successful in this position, the LHSS must work well both independently and in a collaborative environment that relies on effective communication, both with library users and library staff. In addition, the incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain productive working relationships across the Libraries in an environment where flexibility and collaboration are essential.  

 Core Position Duties:

  • Supervise Hale Library Help’s student employees in all facets of their position. This includes hiring, scheduling, training, time approval, communicating procedures and policies, coordinating their work on special projects, and conducting evaluations each semester.
  • Provide excellent customer support in all circulation and reference interactions, including accurately and effectively communicating library policies and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in resources and library users’ needs.
  • Develop and/or deliver content to help patrons discover, navigate, and/or utilize information resources.
  • Participate in assessment to support continuous improvement of library users’ experience.
  • Participate in exploration of new service models or technologies to improve the library user experience.
  • Participate in orientation and outreach activities with university and community groups
  • Serve on one or more of K-State Libraries’ cross-departmental committees or task forces.
  • Seek opportunities for professional development.
  • May be required to work some evening and weekend hours.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully supervise student employees and support their development of skills within the role.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, with a record of success working with or providing services for diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with colleagues or team members.
  • Experience indicating a strong willingness to contribute to a collegial working environment.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Library Science or its equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience providing user-centered services such as in-person reference, IM reference, reserves, or circulation.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting research with library resources (e.g., discovery systems, catalogs, databases, archives)
