About This Role:

Extension Watershed Specialist

Located in a County/District Extension Office in Northeast Kansas or on the Manhattan Campus.  This position is eligible for a remote or hybrid remote work arrangement.

The Watershed Specialist will provide leadership in the development and implementation of science-based information and education programs aimed at reducing nonpoint source pollution and improving water quality in high priority watersheds. The specialist will focus on the goal of motivating individuals in a group or a one-on-one basis to adopt and implement best management practices (BMPs).  Topics will include but are not limited to: livestock management (grazing, water development, streambank management, wintering locations, confined feeding, and others), livestock waste management, crop and land management (nutrient management, soil health, soil erosion control, integrated crop/livestock systems, and other conservation practices), riparian/vegetative buffer establishment and management, and watershed planning and implementation.  Jointly share the responsibility for planning and implementing an extension education program with Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategies (WRAPS) Stakeholder Leadership Teams (SLT), collaborating agencies (especially WRAPS coordinators, conservation districts, NRCS, KDHE, and other state and federal agencies), and other extension personnel, including other watershed extension specialists, county/district agents, and area and statewide specialists. Foster diversity, collegiality, and enhance teamwork.

Primary duties include (with participation of local citizens, WRAPS coordinating non-profits, KDHE, local conservation districts, USDA NRCS, and other collaborating agencies, and other extension personnel): 1) complete/review local needs assessments as described in local WRAPS plans and identify appropriate BMPs, major educational priorities, and technical assistance needs for the watersheds; 2) implement educational programs that rely heavily on one-on-one contact with local citizens but also include a variety of methods such as small group meetings, public meetings, demonstrations, field days and tours, newsletters, websites, and presentations to local citizen groups; 3) provide technical and educational assistance for implementation of BMPs by producers; 4) provide assistance to local WRAPS SLTs within priority watersheds; and 5) assist with grant preparation and project reporting.

This position will be headquartered in a K-State Research and Extension County/District Extension Office in northeast Kansas or on Main Campus.  The position will be responsible administratively to a senior Extension Watershed Specialist under the direction of the Director of the Kansas Center for Agricultural Resources and the Environment.

The position is a term appointment and contingent on availability of grant funding.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture or natural resources with major coursework and training appropriate to the needs of the position. 
  • Evidence of professional development or work experience related to the responsibilities of this position. 
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work and interact with an interdisciplinary team of faculty and agency personnel. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals, groups, and through mass media. 
  • Ability to design, implement, and evaluate educational programs.  Knowledgeable with production agricultural practices and government programs and agencies involved in conservation and water quality.
  • This candidate must be able to work in a multi-cultural setting and create an environment that fosters collegiality and teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completed Master’s degree in agriculture or natural resources.
  • Experience in extension focused on the environmental impacts of agriculture on environmental quality.
  • Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping.

 

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment

$48,000 - $58,000
