About This Role:

The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (KSVDL) and Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology (DMP), College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University are seeking an enthusiastic team-oriented virologist/microbiologist that is a collaborative team player.  The position is clinical-track Molecular Veterinary Virologist/Microbiologist at the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. 

The responsibility of the position is to provide a strong service component that includes extensive use of Next Generation Sequencing in diagnostics, coordination of molecular analysis and interpretation of cases submitted to the KSVDL and research using NGS. For the research component the position will also involve applied research associated with diagnostic case material, emerging disease investigations, and collaborative research projects, , participating in field investigations along with practitioner clients and Outreach personnel, contributing microbiological, (primarily virology) and molecular diagnostic expertise for new agent discovery investigations and research projects, and providing expertise and leadership during emerging animal/zoonotic disease events. The KSVDL NGS laboratory is equipped with two iSeqs, one MiSeq, and a brand new PacBio; there is also access to a NextSeq.  Be a leader in the development of veterinary and agriculture research and service on the new PacBio.  Cooperation and collaboration with specialists across diagnostic medicine/science disciplines to determine and address the complex nature of case material, disease investigations and research will be required.  There will be active interaction and communication with other KSVDL diagnosticians and outreach personnel, practicing veterinarians, research scientists, and regulatory agencies in selected situations. Teaching responsibilities are expected to be minimal and would primarily involve interacting with veterinary students during rotations through KSVDL (VDMP 902), diagnostic medicine interns and resident trainees in the training programs and Graduate student committee activities.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to applicants with a molecular/NGS and bioinformatics background, functional diagnostic laboratory background, a strong history of relationships with food animal production veterinarians and/or a DVM or equivalent degree.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
