About This Role:

This position supports compliance assurance efforts of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. The position exists to ensure the legal and safe management, control, and disposal of hazardous materials at Kansas State University through direct handling of hazardous materials and waste, facility compliance inspections and by providing consultation to the campus community (i.e., principal investigators, faculty, staff and students) about environmental regulatory requirements. This position is part of a hazardous materials emergency response team that promptly addresses hazardous materials incidents on campus (during and after hours) and conducts related abatement activities. This position also assists the Environmental Compliance Manager with the development and compliance assurance of environmental protection programs mandated as part of RCRA, Controlled Substances Act, CAA, CWA, and other environmental protection acts and related regulations.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA degree and one to three years of relevant experience. Eight or more years of directly related work experience in the management of hazardous materials/waste may substitute for required BS/BA degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in chemistry, in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science, environmental engineering or closely related science degree and one to three years of relevant experience.
  • MS Environmental engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field.
  • Experience and/or education illustrating knowledge of environmental regulations (to include those promulgated under RCRA).
  • Previous experience managing hazardous materials/waste in a similar setting.
  • Strong knowledge of chemistry principles and an understanding of other physical sciences and/or engineering.  Understanding of the hazardous properties of chemicals and related adverse reactions.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to read and interpret written instructions, regulations, policy, procedures and SOPs. Good customer service skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to interact with others in a professional setting, remaining courteous even when faced with difficult situations and clients.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements of CAA, RCRA, CWA and DOT - particularly pertaining the management and transport of hazardous materials. Demonstrated skills in hazardous materials management.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and DOT 49CFR174 hazmat upon hire or within 90 days of hire.
  • Computer proficiency in PC environment - Microsoft Office (using Internet browsers, Outlook, Word, Access databases, Excel spreadsheets, specialized database software).
  • Ability to use computerized data management systems.
