About This Role:

The Office of the Vice Provost Student Success is seeking a Part-time Staff Assistant for the K-State Salina Campus. This position is responsible for providing supervision of the TRIO Upward Bound (UB) participants during the Upward Bound summer program. The Staff Assistant serves as a Mentor for the summer Upward Bound program at K-State Salina, Department of Vice Provost Student Success. The Upward Bound Summer program is June 5-July 14, 2023, and the residential portion of the summer program is June 5-June 29, 2023. The Mentor will facilitate small groups activities and events and supervise TRIO Upward Bound participants residing on campus during the residential summer program and attending college visits and cultural activities and events.

Upward Bound is a campus-based TRIO program designed to assist area high school students with additional academic preparation, advisement, and encouragement to succeed in high school and later in college.

The Upward Bound Program participants are involved in the program from the time they are selected for participation until they graduate from high school. The program offers a six-week summer program, which consists of residential and non-residential components and Saturday sessions during the academic year. Students must meet family income guidelines and/or be first-generation college-bound.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completed at least 2 college academic years by June 1 (junior, senior, graduate student or relevant experience) with at least a GPA of 3.0 and no academic problems, probation, or expulsions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in supervising youth.
  • Demonstrated experience leading small groups and tutoring.
  • Demonstrated experience showing effective leadership skills, lead by example, mentoring and being a role model for high school students.
  • Demonstrated experience showing strong interpersonal skills

 Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • Must attend the 2-day training on June 1-2, 2023. 
    • Must live in the residence hall during the summer program (June 1-June 29, 2023). 
    • Day shift staff must assist with community service and college visits
    • Optional cultural trip during July 10-14, 2023 along with college visits
    • May not participate in classes or other employment during the UB summer program dates that interfere with summer programming.
    • Must be able to work early morning shift or late evening shift, and participate in physical activities
    • Must attend CPR, First-Aid and AED training, provided as on the job training, unless you have current certification
    • Must be able to drive various vehicles (sedan, suv’s, minivan, etc.)
    • Must provide 24/7 supervision for attending students
    • Must supervise summer food service program
  • Valid Driver's License upon employment
