The Therapist is responsible for providing mental health support and counseling services to veteran and military-affiliated students at Kansas State University. This role requires a deep understanding of veteran students' unique challenges and experiences and a commitment to helping them navigate the transition to academic life while addressing their mental health and well-being needs. Position will be jointly housed within Counseling and Psychological Services and the Military-Affiliated Resource Center.
Clinical Duties
• Individual Counseling: Conduct one-on-one counseling sessions with veteran and military affiliated students to address a range of mental health concerns, including but not limited to PTSD, depression, anxiety, and adjustment issues.
• Develop individualized treatment plans which may include recommendations for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Systems Family Therapy, Seeking Safety, Trauma Informed Care, Referral to Higher Level of Care, and Family Support Services such as Parenting and Marriage Seminars.
• Group Therapy/Workshops: Facilitate therapeutic support groups tailored to the needs and experiences of veteran and military affiliated students, fostering a sense of community and mutual support.
• Assessment and Treatment Planning: Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine the mental health needs of veteran and military affiliated students and develop personalized treatment plans.
• Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions and treatment plans in compliance with university policies and legal regulations.
• Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate crisis intervention services for veteran and military affiliated students experiencing acute mental health crises, collaborating with university resources and external agencies when necessary.
• Provide professional counseling and psychological services to individuals, couples, groups, and consultations to the general student population.
Administrative
• Outreach and Education: Organize and participate in outreach efforts to raise awareness of mental health resources available to veteran and military affiliated students. Deliver educational workshops and presentations on mental health topics relevant to veteran and military affiliated students.
• Consultation: Collaborate with university staff, faculty, and administrators to support veteran and military affiliated students in academic and non-academic settings, offering guidance on best practices for working with this unique student population.
• Professional Development: Stay current with the latest research and best practices in veteran and military affiliated mental health and counseling through ongoing training and professional development.
• Cultural Competency: Continuously enhance cultural competence related to military culture and veteran experiences to provide effective counseling and support.
