Extension agents are professional educators who serve as a link between Kansas State University and communities across Kansas. Cherokee County is a rural county in the southeast corner of Kansas, bordering Missouri and Oklahoma. Despite being a rural community, there are three larger communities—Joplin, MO; Miami, OK; and Pittsburg, KS—within miles of the county’s borders. Agriculture is the county's main industry, with grain and livestock production contributing significantly to the local economy. This position will lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of research-based educational programming related to agriculture and natural resources. Programming may include but is not limited to: agronomy; livestock production; agricultural economics, management, and public policy; horticultural production and management; and natural resources conservation and environmental stewardship.

Assistant Professor, Sorghum Breeding and Genetics 12-month, tenure track position, 80% Research, 20% Teaching Position #W0007443 Location: Department of Agronomy, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506-5501 The Agronomy Department at Kansas State University is seeking an Assistant Professor to develop an innovative research and teaching program in sorghum breeding and genetics to address objectives that enhance the productivity, sustainability, and profitability of sorghum production in Kansas and the Great Plains. Responsibilities include leading a breeding program to develop and release new sorghum germplasm, parent lines, and hybrids. Areas of innovation could include germplasm characterization, application of functional genomics, statistical genetics, and applied molecular breeding approaches to sorghum breeding. Specific research targets may include abiotic and biotic constraints to production and pursuit of improvement for productivity and profitability. The presence of a large and diverse community of sorghum researchers with the KSU Center for Sorghum Improvement and USDA-CGAHR provides ample opportunity for cross-disciplinary collaboration. The incumbent is expected to develop an externally funded research program including the training of graduate students, peer-reviewed publication of research results, and promoting collegiality within the KSU and broader communities. Responsibilities include teaching courses in plant breeding/genetics, and the development of commercially relevant improvements in sorghum through public-private collaborations. Fellow (Post Doc) Manhattan, Kansas On-site requirement
We seek an enthusiastic colleague to help lead an experiment co-designed by The Nature Conservancy and researchers at Kansas State University. The experiment will assess the effectiveness of “virtual fence” technology to control cattle grazing locations with the aim of improving conditions for grassland birds, and improving stream health including water quality, stream macroinvertebrates, and streamside vegetation. The post-doctoral fellow will be jointly supervised by Dr. Alice Boyle and Dr. Walter Dodds (K-State Biology) and collaborate closely with Tony Capizzo (The Nature Conservancy; Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve) and managers from the partner ranch.
Research Associate Colby, Kansas, Garden City, Kansas On-site requirement
A research associate position is being requested to conduct irrigation research and extension activities including, but not limited to, maintaining and operating various complex and sophisticated irrigation systems (subsurface drip, research based lateral move overhead irrigation, and center pivot irrigation) with cutting edge technology installed including variable rate water and chemigiation capacity; installing, calibrating, and maintaining research instrumentation; detailed field data collection; maintaining records of field operations and providing write-ups (technical summaries) for various studies, which will impact the way water is applied in the state of Kansas and other surrounding states in the region; providing leadership to graduate students and summer interns; coordinating outreach activities (field days, short courses, etc.); and when necessary communicating with university, state, and industry personnel.
