About This Role:

This position is key to the agricultural planning of crop planting and harvesting to utilize the land and resources that we have as a department to meet the needs of our Animal Units during the year. This position is vital in supporting mechanical experience to all of our units to keep machinery up and running on a daily basis.

This position will also determine when and how to prepare soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, spray, and perform all related duties of fields and test plots in the production of feed grains and forages for use in livestock research. Understand and apply the restrictive requirements imposed on production methods which will affect livestock investigations. Keep complete records of production activities for the supervisor's review.

The incumbent will continuously observe for insect, rodent, disease, and weed infestations in crops and pastures. Determine the use of proper remedial procedures in a timely fashion to control any detrimental infestations. Requires a good understanding of potential pests and the various chemical, biological and mechanical methods available for their control. Maintain records for pesticide use permit purposes.

This position will harvest forage and feed grain crops to be used in livestock research. Make decisions concerning proper maturity stage, moisture content, harvesting results, and effective storage to assure sound livestock investigations. This requires special knowledge in the areas of equipment adjustment, rate and speed of operations, crop conditions, and operations of specific testing equipment. Must be able to make independent decisions under unpredictable situations. Assist in determining the timing and method of harvesting.

The incumbent will have other duties as assigned including but not limited to all related livestock and general farming jobs, grounds maintenance,  departmental functions such as field days, clinics, and seminars and maintaining necessary records and reports. Must be neat and able to work with staff, students, producers, and departmental clientele.

This position will also plan and perform maintenance, repairs, and construction of machinery, equipment, buildings, and fences used in crop production and livestock research. Assist in designing and fabricating special items of facilities and equipment for specific research projects. Observe equipment and machinery and recommend and make necessary repairs and maintenance. Requires mechanical and welding abilities.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • One year of relevant experience
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by a hiring manager

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training in the proper use of pesticides and chemicals used in crop production.
  • Experience with welding, mechanical and basic carpentry knowledge and skills.
  • Experience with repairs and maintain buildings, machinery, and equipment
  • Three years of experience farming, growing, caring for, collecting or classifying plants, trees, shrubs or soil to include experience in modern farming and livestock production and the operation of farm equipment and machinery.

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment
  • A commercial drivers license is required at the time of employment
  • Pesticide applicators permit is required at time of employment
