About This Role:

The Agronomy Department at Kansas State University is looking for an Assistant Scientist to work on field, greenhouse and laboratory research activities related to the Soybean Breeding and Genetics project on improving soybean yield, seed composition, and abiotic and biotic stress resistance. This individual will work closely with the Manhattan team and conduct breeding and genetics research to develop and identify new soybean varieties with improved traits.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S. in Agronomy or related field.
  • Experience conducting agricultural research with small plot equipment, or experience in production agriculture.  
  • Valid driver’s license upon employment.
  • Must be able to obtain a Class A Commercial driver’s license and Pesticide Applicator’s license within the first year of employment.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience conducting agricultural research with small plot equipment, or experience in production agriculture.
  • Experience in plant breeding or related field. Experience with self-pollination of crops. Knowledge of multi-media tools, EXCEL, WORD and computer skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to train/supervise undergraduate employees and have the ability to work as a strong team member, as well as work independently when needed.
  • Ability to understand and strictly adhere to all protocols and regulations concerning production of regulated and deregulated GMO traits and non-GMO traits.
  • Ability to record field and greenhouse observations with a handheld computer and manipulate data in the computer system.
  • Ability to operate farm equipment. All responsibilities may require extended hours/weekends and overnight trips to off-site locations during peak periods.
  • Must be able to do physical lifting (up to 50 lbs) and work in varying environments (heat, cold, wind, etc.)
  • Must be able to walk through field and greenhouse bays to conduct research.
  • Must be able to operate, adjust and maintain equipment used by the project. Equipment includes planter, plot thresher, single-plant thresher, laptop, handheld computer and irrigation system in the field and greenhouse.

Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:

$35,460 to $60,260 annually, salary commensurate with experience.
